People often talk about dice swing like it's a bad thing. But the swingy nature of some dice rolls can be an intended feature. Come learn about why Motif intentionally relies on swingy dice rolls despite being 2d6/3d6.

Getting in the (Dice) Swing of Things
On Swingy Dice: The Design of Motif Dice systems play a key role in shaping the dynamics of tabletop RPGs. They not only determine the mechanics of success or failure but also create the emotional backbone of tension, excitement, and consequence in gameplay. In Motif, swingy dice (those that pr

One of my favorite things in basic Motif builds is people discovering they can wear someone down with social efforts as much as (if not even better than) coming to blows. What's one of your favorite things about your designs?

Motif Approach to Conflict: Universal Hits & Conditions

Had a surprise day off
that past Drew booked off and forgot about.

Today was supposed to be a big writing day. It was a big learning ttrpg Affinity day instead. And a walk with a friend. I have the beginnings of a trifold for new goblin players.

A #GameDesignBrunch toast: to the most useless but essential part of your game! 💖

A weirdly specific item. Random table for bad dreams. Rule for what rain smells like. Zero advantage but 100% at the heart of it all.

What's your game's most beautiful useless detail?

Solicit feedback on your game! It’s a fantastic way to get people talking and make them feel involved in your process. You might even uncover a design blind spot. Just remember to take it all with a grain of salt: it's still your vision. (6/10)

#RPGDesign thought: Your game isn't real until you define what it's NOT.

Hard boundaries and clear design lines are where it gets a pulse.

Freedom is a trap. Arguably, design starts with building the cage. What's the most important wall you've built around your game?

What’s one mechanic or design choice that immediately hooks you into a game? Is it clever dice mechanics, narrative freedom, or maybe unique player roles?

Share your favorites and let’s spark some midweek inspiration!

Love how rules shape the feel of a game! Percentile has a high stakes vibe, while every die you roll adds to the drama for dice pools. Other systems spark their own vibes. What’s a mechanic that perfectly captures the spirit of its game for you?

Just added limits that trigger dialogues so players can get a better sense of where to go next.

Been playing Chained Echoes lately, and it reminded me how nice those subtle nudges can feel in RPGs.
