We didn't get to wish anyone a Happy Halloween this year, but there's no time to fall off a ladder like the present when you are taking down your Halloween decorations.

Historically, the theory that you reach the masses by running to the center is built on a candidate who won 43 percent of the vote in a three-way race
A "modest margin" when Mamdani beat his next closest challenger by 8 points in a three-person race. Trump won by just 1.5% and it was played off as a seismic realignment of American politics and culture.
Damn, I hate it when things that happen mean nothing :-(

Discovering computer as an adult makes you go crazy. Discovering computer as a baby makes you go crazy. In all of human history, there will only ever be one generation to discover computer at the correct age: 13
The problem with every post-Millennial generation is they got to go straight to high speed internet. Of course you'll get computer madness that way. Make them start with those old screeching modems and work their way up

like in many respects it would incredibly funny to see a piece of art on here, then click to see alt text - and its the exact same picture, made with ascii art.

Regardless of who owns affordable housing, when costs exceed revenues, owners can’t deliver the residential environment residents need and deserve.

Read our op-ed in @citylimitsnews.bsky.social about NYC’s “antisocial housing” problem.

California’s insurance commissioner is delusional and this seems to be heading to a really bad place. This tough talk should be directed at policymakers for letting construction costs, litigation, and quality issues get so out of hand.

I think at-large legislatures chosen by proportional representation are probably more conducive to this than first-past-the-post districted ones. I find city council members in the U.S. who are like what Marco is describing but for building codes, but I don’t think they have as much power or…
Working on 1970s traffic plans has made me nostalgic of a kind of politician that seems to be a rare occurrence nowadays: the non-generalist politician that actually deeply understands a particular topic and can digest something more than a 15 minutes PowerPoint presentation.

I’ve found a few city and state legislators who really want to get into the weeds on building codes. I think part of the problem though is the districted legislatures. I imagine they deal with lots of other issues and would be happy to give them up and focus on building codes and zoning, but…

the politicians vs actuaries battle over property insurance is fascinating. can't legislate fire or hurricane destruction away, but you can destroy a budget pretending it's possible.
Insurers are some of the only ones who’ve reacted properly to the risk of living at low-densities in light wood-frame houses on the edge of increasingly dry wilderness areas (or at least tried – California has pushed back a lot on insurers pricing risk property)

good thread within the replies, but doesn't address *which* artists could support themselves. who was offered a label contract, who was repped by significant galleries, who was hired into the writers room, who sold their manuscript to a pub house...it wasn't 1:1 with who is 'most popular' today!

I was told that the purpose of zoning was to protect people from pollution

could that have been a self serving lie??
In new research on housing & highway locations @urbaninstitute.bsky.social, we show that:
1—Zoning concentrates dense housing near highways
2—Larger buildings are disproportionately built near highways
3—People of color & low-income people are disproportionately exposed to highway pollution
Highway Pollution Near Multifamily Homes Hurts Residents, but Zoning and Transportation Reform Could Help
New Urban research shows high-density housing in Los Angeles is disproportionately concentrated near high-traffic roads compared with single-family homes, exposing apartment residents to the adverse h...

For ten years now, I've been writing letters from Santa to my young relatives. To mark this decade, I wanted to include something really special, and after a lot of research into his workshop’s size, location and layout, I'm confident that this checks out. Hope they like it!
