Reminder that we are a year into aggressive ICE raids and concentration camps, and there’s not a single example of local cops protecting people against this violence, kidnapping, or death.

I count 10 cities in 2025 that are on track to have the fewest murders since at least 1970. Newark is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1956 (though only have data through Oct this year) and San Francisco is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1942.

New paper just dropped about sticks and carrots in climate policy: “Policy carrots alone do not dramatically reduce future emissions. Only with policy sticks are there unambiguous signals to substantially shrink the size of incumbent fossil fuel industries.”

For assholes who didn't live through the 60's and 70's, yet romanticize it like Duffy, I have one piece of advice for you:

Watch Mad Men.

Yes, as a child born in 1957, that type of misogyny, selfishness, and racism was how the U.S. rolled.

Fuck you if your choice is to go back to that hell.

UPDATE: CNN confirms that "the envelope [holding the Epstein-Nassar Note] was sent from the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City [where Epstein was being held] to Nassar"—*and* got vetted by federal officials.

Which explains the Virginia postmark (where the FBI is).

Mitt Romney said the quiet part out loud: the rich should pay more in taxes.
The Wall Street Journal attacked him for it.
But he’s right—and ignoring the math is how democracies crack.

The Epstein coverup will go down as one of the greatest scandals and miscarriages of justice in U.S. history.

Everyone involved with Epstein’s victims or with the coverup needs to be prosecuted and go down in shame.

It does not matter if they are GOP or Dems!

Repost if you agree.

When they wanted to release the files early this year, they paid $1M in overtime and put 1000 people on it - until they realized what was in the files. Now they’re slow walking the release.

A few reminders about the SCOTUS immunity decision for Presidents:

It does not provide immunity for prior crimes.

It does not provide immunity to the President's cabinet.

Similar to Roe v. Wade, it can be overturned in the future.

Red states are trying to start the civil war they always wanted by sending their National Guard units to invade blue cities.

Sooner or later blues states will have to send units to defend their cities because that is what the National Guard is for. Defending cities not attacking them.

DOJ briefly uploaded this letter from Jeff Epstein to serial child molester Larry Nassar:

"Our president shares our love of young, nubile girls. When a young beauty walked by he loved to 'grab snatch,' whereas we ended up snatching grub in the mess halls of the system."

Trump set new Kentucky records w/his 64.4%, 2024 win.

The nat'l poverty rate is 10.6%. In Kentucky, it's 16.6%.

Jim Beam employed some 1500 Kentuckians - up til now, anyway.

Congratulations, MAGA, you've scored another big middle finger from your lord and master.
Jim Beam Whiskey will shut its distillery for 2026 thanks to plummeting sales amid retaliatory tariffs from the European Union after Trump's tariffs and a bourbon boycott from Canada.

I’ve switched to addressing most but not all my letters to patients, copied to GPs.
This powerful blog from @rorycj.bsky.social will get me to switch completely
Possibly, more importantly to use what influence I have in designing the defaults in the EPR we are building
open.substack.com/pub/rorycell... My latest healthtech Substack post is about those annoying letters that are addressed to your GP but should be written for the patient

Garcia: First, let’s be very honest about what’s happening. This is a White House cover-up. They are now involved in an illegal cover-up of the Epstein files. They’re defying Congress. They’re defying their own base. They’re lying to the American people.

really cannot be emphasized enough that bari weiss has literally never done journalism. i don’t mean that in the pejorative sense. i mean that in the “has never performed the job she was hired to do” sense
One explanation for Bari killing the story is that she did so as a public act of fealty to the administration. But another is that, as an inexperienced journalist, she doesn’t understand that a refusal to go on the record is a kind of comment in and of itself

In terms of US politics, Bush v. Gore is the defining event of the century. It set the template: a ruthless right that instinctively seeks power & doesn't give a shit about rule of law...and a bunch of hapless, feckless octogenarian Dems worried about the good opinion of centrist opinion columnists.
The 25th anniversary of Bush v Gore is today. The conspiracy mongering & corruption of the GOP has been brewing for a long time.

Roberts, Barrett and Kavanaugh were all on Bush's legal team, where they pushed unfounded legal theories. SC justices were already enmeshed in voter fraud myths.
Here's Sandra Day O'Connor endorsing News Max levels of voter fraud conspiracies in the 2000 election.
