I’ve heard there is a focus group for people who have had cancer treatment (patients) happening at UCL in London on 3 Dec. It’s to discuss a potential new therapy. Check out the link via the QR. I can vouch for the people running the group.

If you’re a menstruating person & your health insurance is in peril, get your ferritin checked now!

Iron deficiency is super common & causes symptoms ranging from fatigue to hair loss to cognitive dysfunction.

Ferritin should be 30+ in adults (50+ even better)

What are we losing by offloading our thinking to A.I.?
Why Even Try if You Have A.I.?
As A.I. grows more powerful, we may be more and more tempted to give up in advance and let it figure out things for us. What will we lose as a result?

Physicists at the Large Hadron Collider turned lead into gold – by accident
The ancient dream of turning lead into gold is now a reality – but it’s not quite what the alchemists might have hoped for.

Some good news in dark times for science and medicine.
THIS IS HUGE! Researchers at McMaster University have discovered a NEW peptide antibiotic that targets a broad range of disease-causing bacteria INCLUDING those RESISTANT to existing antibiotics. This discovery marks the first potential new class of antibiotics in NEARLY 30 YEARS. 🧪🧵⬇️

🤔Big Question: Can precise targeting of neutrophil-driven NETosis and fibrosis halt disease progression more effectively than broad immunosuppression?

Last night we watched Ukrainian Opera & Ballet Theatre Kyiv perform La Traviata on tour in Portsmouth UK. A wonderful performance. At the end they sang the Ukrainian National Anthem - a full opera cast with orchestra. The audience all on their feet. Spine tingling. Slava Ukraini

Waiting for the performance to start. Excited to see the show! Tough to see (and have a quick chat to) a member of the WNO chorus outside protesting about cuts before taking to the stage. Culture and arts are some of our strongest assets as a country, we should fund them #SaveOurWNO #AchubOCC

Lots of medics on here and it feels like a safe space to ask an open question. I’ve always been struck by a paragraph in Atul Gawande’s book Being Mortal about the mindset/ sense of identity of Drs. I’ve often referred to it, but I’m really curious to hear reflections on his idea/statement.

Iron deficiency is relatively frequent and seen by all types of physicians.

For years, iron supplements were given multiple times a day.

Now we know that should never happen.

So why the change?
