Not to be too functionalist about it but this is literally what institutions are supposed to do: make and enforce rules that keep us from making potentially deadly mistakes we personally have not made before. Declining trust in institutions will lead to ever more of this nonsense.
Humans are so dumb that anything they don't personally remember doesn't seem real to them.

People have no personal experience of a virus making dogs go crazy and bite everyone that is 100% fatal to both the dog and the humans, so they think it's no big deal.

The #terrapin bug in the early stages of the SSH Binary Packet Protocol is absolutely fascinating, and one of the coolest bugs I've seen.

IMO the pearl-clutching around it is entirely unfounded (with a couple very tiny & specific exceptions) - MiTM w/active interference isn't a common threat model
