I read poetry to rare lizards.
I love it when it rains at seedling-watering-hour, especially as I have been in my PJs since about 5pm.

This absolute 80s icon is for sale and I unironically adore it:

Hey Otago friends - did you know that the ORC is looking for your (yes YOUR!) feedback on a biodiversity strategy?

Even if you don't have huge takes or don't feel madly informed, I am sure that your thoughts will be valuable. So just go for it!

When politicians say that they want a "mature" or "sensible" or "reasoned" discussion about something, they are saying that if you disagree with their pov, you are being immature, foolish and unreasonable.

My Dad is newly diagnosed with a rhumatic-adjacent conditions and tells me, slightly surprised "you just never feel quite well." Much as I adore him, stopping myself from yelling "this has been me for 36 years and NOW you have some empathy" is taking energy.

I recommend using orange juice and peel in your rhubarb jam and slathering it on your Sunday croissants

Among the best things about the new fence is that the Small One and I can play fetch in the garden without her losing her tiny mind and jumping the fence/charging through the hedge. This is especially good on evenings when I've little energy for a proper walk.

My work email signature currently has a banner beneath it about our "unique species" and, due to years of evidence-based ranting about the over-use of the term unique in describing our critters, I will no longer send work emails.

The small one was terrified of the fireworks last night. She was basically climbing up me and nothing would sooth her.

Look, I love fireworks. They're beautiful and colourful, and bring light into long dark nights. But allowing them to be let off all over the place is cruel. And we're not that.

Outed myself as a total nerd in today's training by enthusiastically putting my hand up to the "who really likes thematic analysis" question.

I have training today and have forgotten to bring my work phone and honestly, I’m so not worried

The lyrics that are currently keeping me grounded, in my work and my life, are these:
"If it's down, it's down together,
If it's up, it's up as one"

They are from Operation Mincemeat, sung by submariners. But also are for the time in which we're living.

May I recommend a podcast called 'When we all get to Heaven" which is about MCC San Francisco, which follows how a gay church got through the AIDS crisis. It includes tape recordings from the church at the time and is incredibly moving.

The absolutely unexpected joy of a night at home when I was expecting to be at a meeting two hours down the coast.

The Small One is 8 today! The very best of tiny, shiny and generally furious dogs.

I have brought some wood under shelter, cut some kindling and have laid the fire as tomorrow looks cold.

Also, I spent a joyful half hour on the village beach with friends this afternoon and weall felt like we were getting proper sun.

A bunch of small children in party outfits are being dropped off somewhere nearby. Much, mostly pink and sparkly, excitement.
