About science and education, also health care and immigration, about law and government and foreign affairs. This not something that will ever be “over”. Everything has changed.
This is a rupture, there will be a before and an after. There is no reason to believe the after will resemble the before, at all. This is a demarcation in the lives of thousands of researchers and tens of thousands of educators.

There’s a lot of focus on whether super-intelligent AI poses an existential risk. But I’d argue a bigger risk in near future is that a leader makes a very bad decision based on something AI-generated but wrong. In other words, the misperceived intelligence of AI is probably the real risk currently.

I googled "volcanoes erupting today" because someone commented on social media about earthquakes and volcanoes, and AI told me that Mt St Helens was erupting today. It is not. I can see it right now. No eruption. Google's AI is trash.

After writing my history of concentration camps, I came to believe that short of committing murder yourself, one of the worst things you can do is to abet or exploit the suffering of another human being to increase your own power in the world.
We've reached the point where Republicans are flying to El Salvador to visit one of the most vicious prisons in the world to have photo ops so they can prove their loyalty to the President of the United States.

It occurred to me this weekend that things will never be like they used to be. Like with Covid, we had to accept that we could not return to pre-Covid; we had to adapt. Enough has been destroyed now that we can never have pre-Jan. 20 back again. We can only fight to end this and start anew.

My Representative held a town hall (by telephone) last night and it was so good. Thoughtful, strong, realistic, hopeful. She’s been in DC for less than 2 months but she is doing good work. The state Attorney General is too. www.facebook.com/share/v/15zK...
