They take this line because they think it's savvy, because they have a weak conception of politics. It concedes an enormous amount of ground to the Republicans which needs to be contested for reasons up to and including them canceling future elections in this country. That's not an exaggeration.

They are taking this approach at a time when an unpopular fascist regime needs to consolidate its power against the laws of entropy and decay and abysmal approval ratings. It's why the hands off approach is so dangerous, and it started with the unilateral, uncontested shutdown of USAID.

Also it’s “was the officer lightly struck at low speed while the driver was trying to escape before unloading his weapon” vs “was he struck at all before unloading his weapon”. There is no angle that supports the official view of events.
