They will be replaced in order to, he says, "ensure that the agency receives scientific advice consistent with its legal obligations to advance our core mission," whatever that means.

The world has changed before and, when it did, it wasn’t because a president, a prime minister, a CEO or a celebrity decided it had to.

It began when ordinary people – people of no particular power, wealth, or fame – decided that the world could and should be different.
In the Face of Climate Change, We Must Act So That We Can Feel Hopeful—Not the Other Way Around
Some of the impacts of climate change are already here today. But the worst can still be avoided. Our future is in our hands.

"An extra 2.3 million people in European cities could die as a result of extreme temperatures — both hot and cold — by the end of the century if countries do not take action to mitigate climate change, according to a study that modelled the effects of rising temperatures."

Extreme heat will kill millions of people in Europe without rapid action
Climate models predict that the number of heat-related deaths could soar in cities over the coming century, even when efforts are made to keep people safe.

I don't know who needs to hear this,

but "scientists don't know everything and have been wrong before"

does not mean that a random-ass conspiracy theory with no evidence

should be given the same respect as the overwhelming weight of scientific evidence and expert consensus.

So perhaps all the center-left pundit types who joined in the DEI pile-on were not in fact responding to public opinion, but were merely laundering their own reactionary instincts in a way that resolved cognitive dissonance?
DEI public favorability continues to be +19.

Pundits are wrong that:

1) DEI is unpopular. It's popular.

2) This recent support is thermostatic. This is NOT thermostatic. DEI favorability has been high throughout its existence (second pic).

As I think about the shock waves & rush to protect those at immediate risk, I also think about the longer need to build social fabric for climate action. Climate change amplifies & intersects w so much: risk from extreme heat/floods/hurricanes, health, food, water, housing affordability, conflict.

When I moved to DC in 2019, there were ads touting the climate change benefits of taking public transit.

One, which I had to walk by every day, claimed climate change made sharks bite people more. That's nonsense. I investigated.

It turns out this ad was misquoting some of *MY* research!
Is Climate Change Causing Sharks To Bite Humans? Metro Thinks So
Taking public transit reduces greenhouse gas emissions. But does it change shark behavior? Scientists are dubious.

In a new paper, we look at how we can allocate the global warming space instead of carbon budgets and translate it to warming-equivalent emissions budgets.

Noteworthy, many developed and advanced developing countries have already by far exhausted their fair warming budget. (1/2)
Considerations of fairness in mitigation efforts can get complicated (see earlier post), especially when we look beyond CO₂. In a new paper led by Mingyu Li, we propose an approach to address this, allocating a remaining 'global warming budget' to countries in line with the Paris Agreement’s goals.

Equity is central to international climate policy, but quantifications often only look at carbon dioxide. This study allocates a global warming budget for all greenhouse gases and shows most developed...

We don’t generally start campaigns with disruptive direct action.

That can get a lot of attention, but we usually try to talk to the politician who decides the issue, first.

Then, if they don’t listen, start to do things like leafleting and petitions and small protests. Then bigger events.
It’s not flashy, but we leaflet at @NYCComptroller.bsky.social @BradLander.bsky.social’s events to push him to fight Trump and climate change.

Today, we were at Brooklyn law school at another of his public appearances.

He should move NYC’s business from dirtier to cleaner money managers. 🧵
