Due to the Earth-Moon distance only a tiny fraction of the sunlight reflected by Earth reaches the lunar nightside, which reflects a tiny fraction back to Earth, appearing dimmer than the portion directly illuminated by the Sun.

Saw this on my walk tonight and it was truly magical 🥺✨️
Oh wow, the thin crescent Moon and Venus are pretty close together (about 2°) tonight! Look south/southwest after sunset. Very pretty! I can't take a pic yet because the sky is still too bright.
