Any of you read Bradbury’s A Sound of Thunder, where at the beginning of the story, they’d elected the progressive, decent candidate, defeating the #fascist would-be dictator, but then at the end, after they’d changed history, they’d elected the fascist would-be dictator, and everything was #awful?

HB 3225 is dead. Texas teens maintain the right to read freely in their local libraries.

Grassroots organizing, coalition building, and individual Texas students, authors, parents, librarians, & public library supporters using their voices WORKED.

Haven’t been on here or posted on here in a while. Every day the news feels debilitating, doesn’t it? Here is a cute rescued owl who serves as an ambassador at the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores to cleanse your feed.

Booker: "I confess that I have been imperfect. I confess that I've been inadequate to the moment. I've confess that the Democratic Party has made terrible mistakes that gave a lane to this demagogue. I confess we all must look in the mirror and say 'we will do better.'"

Now when #history teachers discuss the longest #filibuster ever, it won't be Strom Thurmond railing against the Civil Rights Act.

Yes, thank you!!!!
People saying that Cory Booker's actions are a "stunt" have no understanding of its profound psychological power. For the US and beyond. People ALL OVER THE WORLD are watching this and thinking, "Oh, thank god. They're fighting back. Someone over there is finally fighting back."

Thurmond was the same age as Booker when he set the record Senator Cory Booker just broke.

Thurmond was afforded a bathroom break and read from the encyclopedia. Booker held the floor the entire time and delivered a consistent, cogent speech for more than 24 hours.

Incredible.
April 1, 2025 at 11:43 PM
I believe that it’s important to note not only that Senator Booker just beat Thurmond’s senate floor speaking time, but also that Thurmond was speaking in an effort to prevent the Civil Rights Act of 1957. Booker should be proud for erasing that distasteful record. #corybooker

Most people don’t know this, but @PBS is part of the backbone of America’s emergency alert system.
• Helps push IPAWS alerts (AMBER, weather, etc.)
• Broadcast-based = works when cell towers go down
• Trusted info during crises

We do not have a free country in this moment. When they can nab someone off the street because they don't like what they say, they can nab anyone.

Indeed. We are losing our positions on the world stage.
I’m going to repeat this:

In 1933, German universities were, by every measure, the best in the world. In a few short years, they were destroyed by the Nazis. Almost a century later, they have yet to recover.

Since 1945, universities have been a cornerstone of US power & prestige. Arrivederci.
I’m told this is a real letter. It basically says, “We’ll destroy Columbia unless you destroy it first.”

Do you think it’s because it’s Lent and therefore somehow sinful for me to order large fries, or because I know the labs I had drawn today will come back high for cholesterol? But somehow my French fry order was number 666, and it was disconcerning for the McD’s girl to hand them to me. #devilfries

A friend of a friend is an ER doc employed by the VA on an army base, and is one of the “government employees” who has to write an email each Monday, explaining what he did the previous week that makes his position necessary. Um…he treats VETERANS who are sick or injured.
you’re fired. wait you’re rehired. email us a list of things you’ve done today wait forget it you’re fired again. come back your job was important. you’re fired. or hired. come in to the office. wait the office has no computers go home. we are the department of government efficiency.

Horrific. I am not proud to be an American right now.
European nations know they can no longer count on the US to fight for democracy in the world. The orange psychopath and the Republican party have irreparably damaged the world’s view of the US forever. No one will be there for us if we need them in the future.

As others have stated, the time, energy, and resources to reprove existing science take away vital time, energy, and resources that could go towards helping people and solving real problems.
One consequence of the resistance to established science is the way it forces scientists and journalists to re-prove and remind people of what is true. NPR has a story noting why measles are a big deal: It's one of the most contagious diseases on Earth. loom.ly/WMZO9pw
As the Texas outbreak grows, how contagious is measles, really?
Vaccination eliminated measles from the U.S. 25 years ago. But it can still spread in pockets where vaccination rates are low, like the west Texas county with a current outbreak. Here's how fast.

For journalists, writers, artists, historians, photographers and cultural workers -- it's going to be so, so important that we document and bear witness to this moment in history.

It's going to be hard, and many of us will have to move differently. But we must try.
