Somebody once told me that there's no such thing as universal parenting skills, there's just building a good relationship with that particular child. I think about that all the time, especially when I catch myself wanting to give anybody advice on parenting based on my experience with my one kid.

A lot of entirely normal people got called terrorists recently, by the government, for being insufficiently upset about the murder of a podcaster. I suspect that there's some bias at work, because saying "a lot of people didn't like that gentleman" could get you banned from this website in September

Also, and I’m going to hold your whole face when I say this: anybody and everybody is capable of taking a good healthy idea and warping it into something toxic and abusive. We have to stop giving away our best tools because somebody threw a hammer through a window instead of using it to fix a door.

This relates to my one bit of unsolicited parenting advice: by the time your child is 13, they’ll be passionate about an activity or identity that you don’t understand. What that is, and how you react to it, will determine and define your relationship with your child from that point forward.
