From the lab of Maxwell Heiman discussing the interesting topic of apical ECM and the function of sensing organs and how these ECM proteins can both mechanically and biochemically modulate the organ's functions.

New preprint!

How are developmental cycles coordinated across cell types?

It turns out that, like Geppetto's cuckoo clocks in the GIF below, individual cell types are each performing their own little crazy routine, but all in sync with each other.

My fabulous colleague (and ex-postdoc) @inechipurenko.bsky.social and I (mostly Inna!) wrote a review extolling the many virtues of C. elegans for the study of cilia biology. A really interactive and collaborative community of people working in this field too.

The nucleus is fantastic, but can it beat #cilia and #flagella 😉 here stained for tubulin (magenta) with an intraflagellar transport train (green) after #expansion microscopy and #STED or shown by classic TEM. JCS @jcellsci.bsky.social found the solution and is featuring both! 😍

People with Centrosome and Cilia interests: Jeremy Magescas and I are organizing a workshop about our favorite organelles! Discussing about novel approaches and discoveries in the field, with a panel discussion with the invited speakers (Wanying Tian, Juan Wang, Kirsten Judge and Jessica Feldman).

Come join me talking about how cilited mechanosensory neurons rebuild their ciliated sensory endings after these are shed different times during postembryonic development.
My talk is an example of how much we can learn from discoveries made decades ago, but have never been further explored! #worm25

A mystery for an olfactory expert:

We did brain clearing and lightsheet imaging. There should be no fluorophore in olfactory bulb (viruses in frontal cortex!) yet puncta in green and red channels. Puncta did not colocalize with NeuN (blue). Any idea?

Machine learning picking these up as 'cells' 😮‍💨

In 1975 "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Space Oddity" were on the UK top 100, and Ward, Thomson, White, and Brenner published the first reconstruction of the C. elegans sensory anatomy.

A short 50 years later, we reconstructed the same neurons and glia in the embryo:
