I study the ways people use and interpret images.
I'm very happy to report that my article, "The Syrian Refugee Crisis and the Iconology of the Interval", has been published in the Universitat Pompeu Fabra's volume "Challenging the Visual".

Very pleased that @jennysaul.bsky.social & I will be giving a keynote address to the BSA Annual Conference @ St Anne's, Oxford on 8 September. Our talk is called "Can't Unsee: Perspectival Dogwhistles & Deniability".

In this article, @jennysaul.bsky.social & I suggest "perspectival" dogwhistles with examples including AI-generated imagery, rats, and the recent pro-Trump "What's Next for America" advert.

It's finally published! "Visual and Linguistic Dogwhistles" by @jennysaul.bsky.social & me is available online.

Because it's me, we talk about Panofsky, alchemy, Barthes and Panzani, and ancient dudes masturbating on statues. Because it's Jenny, it all makes sense.

I'm very pleased that the new SComS has been published: it's all about image clusters, and the articles are great.

In it, I propose a modernised form of iconology that uses artificial intelligence to help query medium-sized datasets of images.

I'm honoured to be published in the latest issue of 21: Inquiries into Art, History, and the Visual. My article looks at Internet memes from a visual point of view, and notes surprising parallels with Renaissance emblems. doi.org/10.11588/xxi...

How can academics looking at large datasets of imagery use AI fruitfully? I suggest using AI to augment iconological readings in Studies in Communication Sciences:
