In 2019, NIAID proposed an ambitious scientific network focused on pandemic preparedness, research, and response - the "CREID Network".
Ten centers kicked off just as the pandemic was taking off, playing critical roles throughout.
We were just notified the whole network is terminated.

The spread of Mpox in Sierra Leone is unlike anything we have ever seen - and we have been keeping an eye on this bug in the region for >15 years.
Given geographical spread, 50/50 men vs women, this is no "sexual network".
This could be the next one.

Online now: Immunological drivers of zoonotic virus emergence, evolution, and endemicity
Immunological drivers of zoonotic virus emergence, evolution, and endemicity
In this perspective, Andersen and colleagues examine how host immunity shapes the emergence, evolution, and persistence of novel and emerging viruses. They highlight the role of antibody-driven selection in viral adaptation and endemicity, emphasizing research priorities that integrate immunological insights with surveillance and vaccine strategies to improve pandemic preparedness.

Do you know what’s great about vaccines? We can stop outbreaks in the first place, so we don’t have to discuss half-witted hypotheticals about the precise circumstances we’d rather have kids exposed to a deadly, disabling virus…
RFK Jr: "It used to be that everybody got measles. And the measles gave you lifetime protection against measles infection. The vaccine doesn't do that ... it used to be that very young kids were protected by breast milk. Women who get vaccinated do not provide that level of immunity."
