We find that subclade K viruses are antigenically advanced; however, this year's flu vaccine surprisingly elicited antibodies in many individuals that efficiently recognized these viruses. The implications are clear: go get this year’s vaccine if you haven’t already!

Augustine was Director of the hemorrhagic fever lab in Kenema, Salone, and is struggling with PSP.

A nice article, highlighting the important work our collaborators in South Africa are doing using wastewater to surveil a bunch of different vaccine preventable diseases (and finding a lot more of them than other reports would make you believe…).

I want to spell this out in case the implications aren't clear:

This means all public tools/webapps of GISAID data (all the ones you've been used to seeing thru the pandemic, as far as we can tell) are prohibited.

The file allowed this. Cut that - cut off all tools the public & others were using.
On Oct 1, 2025, GISAID informed us that they had ended updates to the flat file of SARS-CoV-2 genomic sequences and associated metadata that we had used to update Nextstrain analyses since Feb 2020. GISAID's stated rationale was that their "resources are limited". 1/5

I’m so honored to be a guest on the last episode of Science in Action after a decades-long run. I only wish it were ending on a happier note, but if science were in a better place, it wouldn’t be ending.
If we had a normal Science in Action next week, we'd likely lead on this milestone in H5N1 bird flu, and the global picture
As it is, it's the final episode, and @angierasmussen.bsky.social will be joining a top top panel to discuss the dire state of anti science in 2025.
H5N1 will get a look in?
It’s everywhere except Australia. I don’t know if H5N1 will make the jump to human adaptation and pandemic potential, but it’s never had more opportunities.

DRC just declared an Ebola outbreak with 13 deaths so far.
🚨The WHO has issued an alert on a potential Ebola outbreak in the Kasai Province of Congo.

I really hope the outbreak doesn't spread bc of how difficult this will be to control without US funds -- plus the harm of travel bans, which are little more than security theatre.
