I gave my Latino Studies kids an open-ended project: what do you wish Americans knew about immigration? I wanted creative work- no essays. One student did a contemporary update of the 1849 painting, The Stone Breakers. She featured immigrant workers taking on society’s hardest work. I love it!

I wonder what the American pope means for conservative American Catholics. The GOP has worked for years to erode the separation of church and state and to make conservative politicians our moral leaders. Now we have an American who supersedes the GOP as a faith leader, so what will Catholics do?

So many of my top students in the past were undocumented. It’s heartening to see a community stand up like this.
JUST NOW: A committee that would’ve heard the Lamberth bill to keep undocumented kids out of schools was disrupted as the entire audience recited the pledge of allegiance until they adjourned and moved to a locked room🤨
