I gave my Latino Studies kids an open-ended project: what do you wish Americans knew about immigration? I wanted creative work- no essays. One student did a contemporary update of the 1849 painting, The Stone Breakers. She featured immigrant workers taking on society’s hardest work. I love it!

This what my classroom looks like. I like to fill it with natural light, color, art, and music. I have a turntable/bluetooth setup to play background music for kids before school, during lunch, and when they are working. Today’s selection: Willie Colón.
