🧵 I argue that we can understand the functioning of democracy through 3 core ideals, verification, deliberation and accountability. While no democracy fully achieves those ideals, this thread explains how MAGA destroys all three and inevitably results in democratic regression into authoritarianism.
The conditions that have led to what’s happening in the US today exist in democracies around the world.
They are an inevitable outcome of our collective failure to adapt to fundamental changes in the information ecosystem on which our democracies were originally built.

Just listened to the Hur interview tape
and I’m utterly appalled at all the incoherent and crazy things Biden said about Revolutionary War airports, injecting bleach, people eating cats and dogs, Hannibal Lecter, and Arnold Palmer’s penis. Simply unbelievable that he ran for president again.

The Trump-Supreme Court battle is not really the crisis.

The crisis is here now. Trump is enacting an insidious coordinated attack on our institutions of democratic accountability, designed to crater democracy before next fall.

This is the thing: Many, many people in other countries actually deeply respect and admire Americans, but despise and scorn our government’s policies. The former won’t last forever, though, especially if the latter continue on the current course.
Incredibly moving. 1000s of Lithuanians lined the streets of the capital Vilnius yesterday to honor the four US soldiers killed on their soil.

As their bodies are repatriated to the US, their President will be nowhere to be seen, except on a Florida golf course.

Very informative story, tons of new stuff here, very much worth your time:
How Elon Musk planned for DOGE: Our investigation found that he raised the idea in 2023, becoming fixated on gaining insider access to federal systems. By Dec., he chose USDS as a landing place, and future DOGE members began applying for jobs there. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/28/u...

The operation was driven with a frenetic focus by the billionaire, who channeled his resentment of regulatory oversight into a drastic overhaul of government agencies.

I believe this is correct. And you as a user have the option to control your feed as to whether you see reposts, replies, etc. And I find especially using “hide post for me” as a way to address when everyone is sharing the same post and I’m tired of seeing it.
My one constructive criticism on BlueSky, as a community: we need to “like” less and “retweet” more. In the absence of an algorithm, that’s the way we find each other and reward good content.

The US has a much higher stake in Russia's war on Ukraine than most people think. As Americans consider the costs of continuing to help Ukraine fight the Russians in the coming years, they deserve a careful consideration of the costs of allowing Russia to win.
