Art.

I draw and paint a lot.
(I did a drawing a day in 2024.)

This year I’m listening to records and drawing little pictures of the covers.

My concertina sketchbook.

Mostly created from late July to late August, but with some finishing touches since.
Look at these lovely things:

I’m trying to be as ethical and sustainable as I can with the products I make available while still offering a choice.

It's farewell and adieu to you fair Spanish Blakeys for Week 55 of Listing Dangerously. Also, Bill Maynard's on a bus, Pete Postlethwaite's in a caravan, Anthony Valentine's in Sydney, Orson Welles is in Norwich, and Simon Callow's in the pub, beating up squaddies.

One year ago today, for some reason I was inspired to draw Peter Wyngarde’s ‘Best Dressed Personality’ award.
A drawing a day in 2024
Day 326

I’ve been meaning to draw this for a while.

The 1970 John Stephen Fashion Award 'Best Dressed Personality' trophy.

It was awarded to Peter Wyngarde by 1969 award winner Barry Gibb, and Miss Radio Luxembourg Anne Challis, in Carnaby Street, 15.8.70.

Gene Clark & Carla Olson
So Rebellious A Lover, 1987

I’ve wanted this album for years but it always cost too much for the LP - so today I got the CD.

Fantastic that Gene’s last released album was such an inspired collaboration.

Timeless songs, great performances, sympathetic production.

Roger McGuinn/Chris Hillman
Featuring Gene Clark
City, 1980

A new (to me) album.

I always want to hear dismissed albums by great musicians and I liked the LP that they made shortly before this.
Based on one listen I like it!
Gene is demoted due to his unreliable ways. His two songs sound great.

I’ve just been reminded that it’s a year since I invented the Nigel Kneale Activity Book!

One of my favourite ‘drawing a day’ drawings.

I loved drawing the martian in a Kerr-influenced style.

Day 324

A couple of weeks ago I saw a Mog Activity Book based on Judith Kerr’s stories and it gave me the idea for this, inspired by her husband’s work.

Now I really want it to be real!

I’ve been trying out some different approaches to a cubist portrait composition I started last week.

I photocopied a tonal version then hand-painted/collaged/inked/pencilled in over each of them.

Come on, BBC, get your act together.
I know the BBC are preoccupied, but I've recieved no reply re my complaint about how incompetent the Red Team were on Bargain Hunt (October 26th broadcast). And how they didn't even appear to be taking the game remotely seriously.

This week I only listened to Neil Young albums. Here are my mini drawings of them.

It was only after I’d heard about seven of them that I read it was Neil’s 80th birthday this week! Coincidence? (Yes.)

The most fun to draw was ‘Sleeps With Angels’ and the most difficult was ‘The Monsanto Years.’

The Supper Club film is one of the holy grails of Dylan collecting. Even the Dylan Archives is prohibited from showing the footage to researchers. Almost no one has seen it in 30 years.

I watched it one afternoon this summer, sitting with the director. Here's the story. It lives up to the hype.

The Record Collector special on David Bowie 1981-2016 is mandatory reading. The net has been cast widely & inspiringly for interviewees, as here, where DB’s art curator Beth Greenacre speaks about his love for Frank Auerbach’s Head Of Gerda Boehm. The whole interview with Greenacre is fascinating.

Amazing art.
“The West Front, Liverpool Cathedral”
Acrylic and pastel on canvas

(61cm x 46cm)

This piece is based on a sketch I did last winter of the west front of the cathedral. Completed in 1978, the statue of the Risen Christ by Elisabeth Frink was installed over the entrance in 1993. #art #liverpool

Here are my small drawings of albums I’ve listened to this week, including new purchases from @lookingforthemagic.bsky.social and @logofiasco.bsky.social.

I was very pleased with the squashed Neil Young face in the corner of ‘American Stars ‘n Bars’.

A few weeks ago I got a CD of the Missing Hancocks from a charity shop. I loved the performances & particularly the scripts. I’d seen a few telly episodes but never heard the radio ones.

So I’ve decided to listen to all the existing Hancock radio episodes in order, along with the re-made ones.

Wax
American English, 1987

I taped ‘Building A Bridge to Your Heart’ off the radio when I was 11.

Yesterday I finally heard the LP (bought on Friday.)

‘Bug in the Machine’ stood out: the only song sung by Gouldman. Reminiscent of New Order?

I feel sorry for that cover model.

After work yesterday I rewarded/treated myself: visiting two nearby record shops: @logofiasco.bsky.social
and the newly-opened
@lookingforthemagic.bsky.social
which is about a minute’s walk away from where I work… dangerously close…
