Sometimes I think the global communication network was a mistake because it allows us to know all the awful misery that's happening but doesn't really offer a way to fix most of it.

I realise this is the thought of someone who feels completely hopeless. I don't want to be ignorant. I want to help.

“Individuals on the ground sent a message that reached us Monday morning that 1,200 were dead,” Nathaniel Raymond, the lab’s executive director, said. “By that evening, they said 10,000. By Tuesday, we couldn’t reach them anymore. We assume our ground contacts are dead.”

Made myself some new headphone covers. Can't stand the feeling of the vinyl headphones are made of so these are essential as I am really deaf and basically wear headphones the whole time I'm awake. I made them up as I went along but they are based on some sunflower granny squares I also made up.

I dreamt I was in Japan shopping at some charity shops. I wanted to know how to get to somewhere to the west and the dream turned into one of those weird ones where everyone starts shouting at me. They were all shouting Nishi! Nishi!

Been having loads of dreams where water is pouring in through the ceiling again. I know it's an anxiety dream but I don't know about what specifically. Probably just the rubbish fire that is EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE right now.

I have once again fallen into the cycle of being awake for like 38-42 hours and then sleeping for about hours. I would love it if for just once in my life I could sleep like a normal human.

We need to teach people the difference between being uncomfortable and being unsafe. Because the discomfort of the safest people is endangering the most vulnerable, all day every day.

Just to make my life more exciting, my laptop keyboard decided to say "fuck you" and completely died this morning. My resident IT specialist ran some diagnostics and shit's broke.

AAAAARGGHH. Luckily we had a backup keyboard so now I have a keyboard on my keyboard so I can type while I type.

Just saw someone on Reddit say they were using ChatGPT to solve the parlour riddles in Blue Prince. And of course ChatGPT was wrong because it doesn't work the way they think it does.

But why would you play a puzzle game and try to have something else solve the puzzles? Doesn't compute for me.

Almost without fail, whenever I see a pair of shoes I like online, I click through and find out they are child/baby shoes.

I just really like boxy or rounded toes. I have really small feet but not baby small so looking for shoes online is invariably filled with disappointment.

Just saw a person on a forum tell a second poster (who had posted a genuinely thoughtful and deeply empathetic reply) that the second person's post was "as good as Chat GPT". It was clear from the rest of their comment that they did not mean that as an insult.

It doesn't matter if they are ever coming for you.

It was always ever already too much that they were coming for anyone.

Spotted in the chamber this morning. @mike-reader.bsky.social wearing a @transhistoryweek.com 'Always Been Here' badge.

This has become my new favourite hobby. Spotting our visibly supportive MPs in the chamber.

Than you, Mike 🙏

TW: Talking about spiders

I am not scared of almost any spiders. I like a lot of them. However, I have a specific phobia of wolf spiders and they are pretty common. When it starts getting colder, they really like coming inside. Also, because of climate change, they keep getting bigger.

Sometimes I can't help but think about the fact that everyone of us is here because at some point in the past, people ran toward danger instead of away from it. Ran towards likely harm instead of saving themselves.

And I hope when I have to make that choice, I don't even have to pause to consider.

I have survived the past week by using an entire 16 packet box of Lemsip, literal jugs of dictamo tea (a lifesaver because my throat hurts so bad it's hard to swallow anything without the tea), and just trying not to breathe too hard so I don't dislocate another rib coughing.

A huge blow was dealt to hurricane forecasters this week as a critical tool was abruptly terminated by the Department of Defense and NOAA. The immediate discontinuation of data from three weather satellites will severely impact hurricane forecasts this season and beyond. More ⬇️
