Kabru (and Ryoko Kui) use the pages of The Delicious in Dungeon Adventurers Bible as a workshop for paring down overly complicated first draft character backstories to their essentials in service of the story you're actually trying to tell.
Panels from Delicious in Dungeon of the characters Kabru and Mithrun Mithrun is mid flashback: It's hard to imagine from the way he looks now but back then he was a perfect youth. Mithrun interjects: "No, I wasn't." Kabru listens intently. Mithrun: "Back then, I looked down on everyone. My friends, the criminals, my fellow guards." Mithrun: "...and most of all, my brother. Silver hair and eyes are my tribe's distinguishing features. But he had neither. He was physically feeble and not very bright. Our parents ignored him and everyone whispered that he was illegitimate. He was less than me in every way, but he acted as if we were brothers. He developed feelings for someone who was far above him and instead of him, my parents sent me to the Canaries. I couldn't forgive any of that. The Demon saw through it. That's why he stole my eye and ears." Kabru interrupts: "That's..." Kabru: "...complicated!" Kabru takes a knife to the backstory and physically begins whittling it down to a simpler shape. Kabru: "Let's pare the story down to what you want to say. It's too unfocused. The relationships are too complex." Mithrun: "But if you do that, the punchline won't make sense." "The punchline?" Mithrun: "The fact that I was the illegitimate one, not him." Kabru: "We don't need that bit either. Ideally even a child should be able to understand it.' Kabru: If we summarize it...it will be easier to show the danger in demons. Kabru hands the backstory back to Mithrun as a smooth ball. "Its a very tidy shape now." "That's fine." Kabru: "The world doesn't need to know personal things like that. How have things been with your brother since then?" Mithrun: "Not bad."
