Without asylum:

Marks and Spencer wouldn't exist

Queen would have been without a front man

The other queen wouldn't have had a husband

Judith Kerr would never have written The Tiger Who Came to Tea

And thousands of less famous people wouldn't have been teachers, politicians, neighbours, etc

Just finished watching this incredible talk by Dr. Greg Wilson (sadly I can't find a bsky account for him, find him at third-bit.com ) which cites a lot of great work including that of the incomparable @grimalkina.bsky.social - really a masterclass, I highly recommend it.
really interesting reading list wrapped in a video essay about how to train new software developers about a humanist perspective to software

also, 10/10 title

“The researchers aim to show that the ‘inevitability’ of AI is just a marketing frame perpetrated by the industry and that pushback is a lot more possible than we often see.” Yes!

“‘The uncritical adoption of AI can lead to students not developing essential academic skills such as critical thinking and writing. If students are taught to learn through automation, without learning about how & why things work, they won’t be able to solve problems when something actually breaks’”

Freedom is just another name for “a gap in the law”.
Home Secretary tells Sky News that “there is a gap in the law” when it comes to frequent, repeated protests on the same issue. Hence she will be giving police greater powers to move them to another location or time.

I’m not saying I’m better than you… oh fuck it, I’m better than you.

Interesting observation from an eng manager:

“As soon as I know some text is AI-generated: I lose all interest in reading it.

For performance reviews, I asked people to either not use AI or if they must: just write down the prompt so I don’t need to go thru the generated word salad padding.”

What I find most interesting about the Policy Exchange report is the semi-colonial attitude to Ireland- a co-signatory of the agreement backed up by the EU.

Disrupting justice and security cooperation between the UK and Ireland - and the EU more widely - will leave us less rather than more safe.
It's fascinating watching the same cycle of f%¥£ing around and finding out happening. Some anti-ECHR lawyers in Britain might say this, but Irish and EU politicians think differently, and politics will determine their reaction, not law alone.

Obrack Ofuane in office for -992 years 🤔
I've seen this on Bluesky and had to try it myself. The image below was the response to the prompt: "Show me a diagram of the US presidents since Herbert Hoover, with their names and years in office under their photos" Bravo, OpenAI, bravo.

If a human told you things that were correct 80% of the time but claimed, flat out, with absolute confidence, that they were correct 100% of the time, you would dislike them & never trust a word they say. All I'm really suggesting is for people to treat chatbots with that same distrust & antagonism.

I expect that consumer-facing AI programs will continue to improve and they may become much more useful tools for everyday life in the future.

But I think it was a disastrous mistake that today’s models were taught to be convincing before they were taught to be right.
