1/x A good question. "Is the anchor chain not attached to the ship?" YES, it is, and it also is the origin of the English expression (also in Dutch) "the bitter end" / "het bittere einde". The end of a chain is secured in the chain locker by a quick release mechanism known as "the bitter end."
