Love stats and being mercurial

“Shit human” for my taste in REM albums

Snotty commentary at https://thebestthing.blog
Every year I always resolved to try to read 20-25 books and I’d read a couple in the first month or so then trail off and maybe only finish several.

This year started slow (a couple a month) but I finally got into a groove to hit double that always elusive goal of mine

I will be sure to remind someone who will complain about this album every time they have to listen to it that this is what they wanted.

#398 Yankee Hotel Foxtrot: 2001 or 2002? An answer.
Hey folks! Modest Mouse, THE LONESOME CROWDED WEST (1997) Well, I’m glad I did the poll, because it did confirm that the question of YANKEE HOTEL FOXTROT’s...

Jim Tressel knowing about Terrelle Pryor exchanging his gold pants for tattoos doesn’t seem so bad now does it?

My grandfather was seemingly a fairly run of the mill conservative leaning midwestern guy.

Then I discovered this photo after my uncle passed where he appears to be some sort of Hunter S Thompson character (solid wallpaper game on my aunt and uncle’s part)

NC has now joined Florida as the state with pro sports teams (multiple ones!!) that pale in interest to another state’s team. Including college here, couldn’t even muster a win for UNC, Duke, Florida, Florida St, Miami?
Here are the most viewed team pages across ALL of the Sports Reference sites in each state this year! ⚾🏀🏈🏒⚽

I love this song but it came on while I was just sitting at an intersection where a teenage girl was killed in a wreck after school late last week. There is still glass on the ground and the corner is covered in flowers and this chorus was a lot there

Definitive proof that Florida doesn’t care about baseball. It’s the only state with a team (TWO TEAMS) whose team isn’t the most viewed in its state.
The most viewed Baseball Reference team page in each U.S. state this year!

Which team page had the most views in your state? 🤔

new iOS update is sleek and also defaults in Music to “you must want songs transition as they would on a dance floor.” so many people will wonder why they can’t just listen to an album. Apps > Music > Song Transitions > toggle off.

A most excellent linocut print by Cut From the Land - @ramblingidiot.bsky.social and his wife Kristy - arrived yesterday from all the way in the north of Scotland (Banff if I recall?)…looking forward to getting this framed and up on the wall

While there is a lot of discourse about this addressing an overall question I feel like this just addresses the question on this album

I think the overall question is only addressed by identifying an official source to refer to for these questions (and there won’t be one that makes everyone happy!)
Here it is: the poll to determine the release date of YANKEE HOTEL FOXTROT. Please read the entire form, consider the arguments, laugh at the jokes. The poll runs until 12:01 AM Mon Dec 15. You can change your vote anytime before then. I have tried to turn off the results so that you vote blind.
YANKEE HOTEL FOXTROT: 2001 or 2002? An inquiry.
Here are the facts as we know them: In late 2000, Wilco entered the studio and began work on what would become YANKEE HOTEL FOXTROT. It was completed in early 2001, and was submitted to their label, ...

For the Wilco 2001 @bestalbumbrackets.bsky.social crowd, what if they played the whole album all year live in 2001 but didn’t physically release it until 2002?

There are three groups here:

Pro 2002 who got/listened to the album in 2002

Pro 2001 who also got/listened to the album in 2002 but want to be pedantic

People who don’t like Wilco treating this like wanting an invitation to a party they don’t even want to go to

My lone choice would be Mattingly

We happen to know about YHF because of its backstory. With as broad as the master list desires to be, there could be a number of these types of situations.

I think a definitive reference should be picked to determine an album’s release year (Discogs, ___ streaming service, Wikipedia, whatever)
I’m easy going, sure, but this is the first one where lots of people have strong opinions.
Aren't you typically very easy-going about things like this? If it's released in any way, then it's eligible, unless it's competed in another tournament?

Excellent article about the annual streaming wrap ups (applicable to not just the one primarily mentioned here!)

I’m a stats whore as anyone who follows me knows, but stats are only interesting if they’re meaningful, which typically always requires more than a machine simply spitting them out

All of the discourse this evening about which 2001 albums has only hardened my belief about the quality of the year
Technically you all *do* have mandated listening, it’s called albums from 2001!
