In Super Mario Bros, the King Koopa sprite is much more slender. In Super Mario Bros 2, Wart is a noticably fat villain. Wart is never seen again.
Judging by that pattern, we can assume Bowser's weight insecurity starts in Super Mario Bros 3, with shame so deep he falls through the floor. Metaphor!
