Youth self-harm in Rwanda isn’t just an individual struggle, it’s shaped by culture, family dynamics, poverty & community responses.

We need structural, culturally-grounded prevention and support.

We’re asking research funders & universities to step up because together, they have the leverage - and frankly, the responsibility - to stop the drain and redirect billions currently flowing to commercial publishers 💸 back into community-owned systems that serve science, not profit.

Can you imagine what else we could do with that money?
Fund researchers, students, labs, infrastructure… which all sounds better to me than enriching a publishing oligopoly. 3/n

Why? 🤑
In just the last 5 years, 4 publishers made $US 41 billion in revenue and $14.7B in profit - money that largely comes from taxpayer-funded research budgets.

For context: the entire 2024 NSF budget was $9B USD.
@elsevierconnect.bsky.social made $3.9B that year at a 38% profit margin. 2/n

DLD is a lifelong condition and it does make lots of things more challenging. BUT once a person's needs are identified and they are supported they can thrive.
This is why we need far more awareness of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)! www.naplic.org.uk/developmenta...

It’s actually very sad to see that risk prediction has never gone away, despite so much evidence demonstrating how awful we are at predicting suicide and its related outcomes. This is an incredibly important piece of work that we should all read.
Extremely important work by Matt Spittal, @oliviajkirtley.bsky.social and other colleagues published this week!

Your reminder how rarely we hear from/about the LibDems (72 MPs) on BBC News, compared to the vast amount of coverage they devote to Nigel Fromage & five-MP Reform UK. Could it be because the LibDems aren't screaming about 'migrants innit', which BBC News has decided is the only story du jour?
Very odd watching BBC News talking about the Lib Dem conference and mentioning how the party has struggled to break through in the media like it's nothing to do with them.

Plenty studies showing that your postcode is a better predictor of your health outcomes than your genome.
The BBC & Telegraph are trailing Wes Streeting’s technophile health plans, including genomic mapping at birth.
Is this really gonna transform the NHS into a prevention service within 10 yrs, as Wes claims? For v rare genetic conditions, praps. But for the real burden of disease?

Thoughts, #medsky?

Treatment burden= the work that NHS staff ask/demand of patients in order to optimally manage their clinical condition(s). It’s a *big issue* for patients and we don’t talk about it enough.
For people with multiple LTCs it can outweigh the benefits afforded by seeing clinical teams…
