Just finished one of the few RL Stevenson novels I hadn’t read The Master of Ballantrae. Part of it is set in America and recalled for me our trip to Calistoga in 2018, when @joaokay.bsky.social and I visited the monument to him at Silverado. What a wonderful storyteller, what a great Scot.

1/ Farage is once again ranting about the safety of women and girls.

Here he is with monstrous sexual predator Andrew Tate, rapist Conor McGregor, and we shouldn't forget that Farage is happy to serve as rapist Trump's errand boy. We may also note Ghislaine Maxwell's very generous prison conditions

This 👇🏻. Excellent
This article is an antidote to the all too common trope in the UK among Brexiters and exceptionalists that Europe is somehow a "global bully" (while simultaneously being too weak and unable to rein in emotional France and vengeful Germany. Or something)

No. Europe is a port in a storm.

Scots is rooted in our land, people, culture & history. Along with words like gemütlichkeit in German, or saudade in Portuguese, words like scunner, shuilpit, sonsie and nyaff are impossible to translate accurately, and any attempt to do so will be peelie wallie compared to the original.

Like Petter Dass in Norway, a famous Danish Scot is one whose name is immortal due to the 85 hymns he composed which are sung in the church today. Thomas Kingo (1634 - 1703) was Bishop of Odense and a renowned baroque poet whose father was a weaver called Kinghorn from Crail in Fife.

Many years later I met Roger Ball from AWB in the Shed at Tannadice. He was there with another Dundee soul legend, the drummer Donny Coutts.
I saw Average White Band in Honolulu in 1975 when Pick up the Pieces was No 1 in the American charts. With my Scots voice I managed to talk my way backstage to meet them. Great then to be able to dance to them 50 years on out in Dundee tonight with @joaokay.bsky.social

Interesting that neither the Tories nor Labour seem that interested in this problem. Normally finance is the invisible hand.

They should be interested. The money machine is a large part of what pays for UKG services, productivity issues and deficit, and it is a big multipler.
