I am an evolutionary biologist (though publishing more in medicine these days). I think trans modality is an evolutionary spandrel. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spandre...

This administration is desperately obsessed with ruining this one random guy's life. It's bizarre, and if it were a person doing it instead of a government I'd say it's pathetic

I genuinely do not understand what strange magic Sam Altman has, that causes all these corporations to keep giving him billions of dollars
Sam Altman: hey I made a machine that stole literally all your stuff in order to make CSAM of your child actors, sometimes it encourages people to kill themselves

Disney: Holy shit here's a billion dollars

Altman: the machine loses more than that each week but thank you. Soon it will become god.

They should team up with other transit systems to make one that has a different logo on each side. Then we can all argue about which one's ג, which one's ש, etc
The D.C. Metro is selling these nonsense dreidels as part of the holiday merchandise collection — kind of love it?

I have briefly considered putting together, as an exercise, the most convincing argument possible that there is only ONE gender. Then every time these people rant about "the lie that there are multiple genders" I can say, "you're right! There's only one!"

Maybe one day I'll actually do it
failing her just for this sentence that contains a gish gallop, three scope shifts, and up to six citations needed, bringing her grade up to a d for rejecting the social imposition of gender, but failing her again because she doesn't know what multiple of those words mean, including multiple.

I found and read the press release, and I still have no idea what the fuck L'Oreal is going to use the AI for
I don’t want to seem out of touch but I don’t actually understand the economy anymore.

This post reminded be of the anti-harassment training videos they had us watch at an old academic gig. They all took place in the same office, and that office clearly had a Problem Employee. Credit to the actor, he was clearly having a great time doing a hammy sendup of The Worst Guy
New job, so I get to watch videos of people experiencing micro aggressions at work for an hour.

THIS IS BIG

For non-academics who might not understand why:
1. Sen. Warren is still a Harvard professor so this is a call coming from inside the house
2. As a tenured law prof, Warren knows it is a VERY big deal from a labor standpoint to call on Harvard to ignore tenure. The bar for this is HIGH.
Per CNN, Elizabeth Warren is calling on Harvard to cut ties with Larry Summers after Jeffrey Epstein's emails released last week by House Dems featured Summers making sexist comments + asking for Epstein’s romantic advice.

Can this FINALLY be the thing that forces Larry Summers out of public life? Stop hiring him, stop listening to him, remove him as an obstacle from the paths of people actually trying to accomplish things

Nice case of nominative determinism also
Very impressed with Levi Strong and Jordan Osborne here (I already knew what Lucas Hatton is capable of)

Catching up on the Magnús Ver Magnússon Classic. The swimming pool loading event is delightfully silly.

I do appreciate the different techniques I've seen so far. Walking backwards, walking sideways, someone actually tried swimming at the beginning

Thinking about the Chinese grad students and postdocs I knew in my academic days
“The prohibited activities would include joint research, co-authorship on papers, and advising a foreign graduate student or postdoctoral fellow. The language is retroactive, meaning any interactions during the previous 5 years could make a scientist ineligible for future federal funding.”
U.S. Congress considers sweeping ban on Chinese collaborations
Researchers speak out against proposal that would bar funding for U.S. scientists working with Chinese partners or training Chinese students

Always hilarious seeing adults sit in those tiny chairs for children
Soon, we'll oversee a budget of more than $100 billion — and every dollar will reflect our commitment to working New Yorkers and delivering universal childcare. Good thing some little New Yorkers gave me a counting lesson today!
