My more optimistic take on the whole “did the protests do anything” debate is that here is value to showing you are not alone and that a massive number of people are willing to come out and be public even in very far right areas.

Organization takes time and a diversity of tactics is a positive.

I hope everyone knows that it's very easy for any social content platform, including Bluesky, to be a misery machine and that if you aren't intentional about it, they will absolutely decrease the positive impact you have on the world while making you less happy.

this is painfully obvious, but in case anyone missed it:

someone who genuinely cares about a subgroup doesn't start with "they don't pay taxes".

it is incredibly clear what message that sends. what message that has always sent.
RFK jr on autism today: "These are kids who will never pay taxes. They'll never hold a job. They'll never play baseball. They'll never write a poem. They'll never go out on a date. Many of them will never use a toilet unassisted."

lol. watch us worm boy

A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die.

Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.

Am I depressed because of what's happening or am I depressed because of the people who somehow didn't see it coming?

Both. It's both.

OK, gonna throw this spicy bomb out there.

If you're fortunate enough to have disposable income, then right now it is your duty to use that income wisely. You have agency over how you spend it and you should own how you spend it.

Your decisions do, in fact, affect stock prices of big corporations.

I for one am excited for TikTok to show me a splashy "The US GOVERNMENT HAS DESTROYED EVERYTHING YOU LOVE" screen when I open the app next week followed by Donald Trump crawling through glass to get it back because it helped get him elected thus solidifying him as a HERO OF THE EVERYDAY AMERICAN.

Have I had my mind changed on social media? Yes - NOT by arguing with randoms, but by following experts and first hand folks who share what they do, what they think and what's going on. The change isn't binary - I used to think one thing, and suddenly now another - it's slow and additive: Learning.
