Great thread--read the whole thing. Commercially-produced AI is almost entirely a plague on education: it does almost nothing useful and is playing a big role in sabotaging the development of the expertise and knowledge required for the few modestly helpful applications of generative AI.
Let's have some fun. In this NYT story, we see a picture of an OpenAI billboard on a college campus, suggesting the following prompt: "Give me a guide for mastering this Calc 101 syllabus. In two weeks. Small steps please."

What happens when we actually use ChatGPT to do this? THREAD!

These are all amazing projects, and well deserved. But yet again, the ACLS only awards projects on Latin America by historians. No one from a Spanish dept in sight. 🙄
We are excited to announce the recipients of the 2025 ACLS Fellowships! This year, the program will award more than $3.5 million to 62 scholars, recognizing outstanding research in the humanities and social sciences: bit.ly/4jwiyEq

Arsenal played with so much confidence and without fear, when on night’s like this, with so much at stake, things can get tight and stuffy. There was none of that despite injuries. Lightness to it all, and fun to be had. Great to see players enjoy these big games.

Eric Hoyt wrapped the panel by recording his own love tape, and expressing his feelings about the NEH.

In the spirit of Wendy Clarke’s work, he’d like for it to be shared widely and seen by as many people as possible.

Two-thirds of both houses of Congress could undo this whenever they want by passing a bill over Trump's veto taking all power to set tariff rates away from him. Tariffs are set by law. The Constitution gives the president no power over tariffs--only our current laws do that.
Tariffs are actually controlled by law. Trump can only raise tariffs because the current law says the president can declare an emergency and change rates. Congress could actually pass a law that repeals **all** presidential discretion on tariff rates.
A pivotal group of Senate Republicans is set to deliver a symbolic rebuke to President Trump's tariffs on Canadian products.

Support from four Republicans would give a Democratic resolution to block Trump's Canadian tariffs enough votes to pass in the Senate if all 47 Democrats also vote in favor.

Today I lost an NIH grant training clinicians to do research about intimate partner violence with perinatal women.

More women are murdered in the perinatal period than die of obstetric complications.

I didn't just lose a grant. We lost an entire cohort of people building careers to prevent that.

it's been years upon years of labored "campus culture" op-eds from salaried writers hectoring students about free speech, and now the state is kidnapping students for their speech in broad daylight

If you're 45, that number is 74.7%.

If you're under 30, the number is 100%.

how many of the intellectual authors of trumpism are failed, loser academics?
Lawrence Krauss—well known for his history of sexual misconduct and his long term association with Jeffrey Epstein—editing and publishing this book just as U.S. Republicans are aggressively destroying entire research infrastructures is. . .a choice. This book is a farce. Mock it accordingly.
These people should be ridiculed and laughed out of every room they enter.
