There is still joy in the world because circumstances have led to walking into my office to see a one year old chicken raptly watching baby sea turtles flopping their way into the ocean while Steve Irwin rhapsodizes about how amazing they are.

I haven’t been able to determine the original author but my son sent me this and I legitimately laughed out loud.

Come on Democratic senators. Don’t let Booker hog the spotlight. We need all of you up there.

I work with a guy going through absolute hell right now. And it’s another perfect example of how our healthcare system is utterly broken. His wife of 30 years suffered a health crisis while on vacation. She essentially hit a tipping point for a condition she had that masked by other issues.

Interviewing folks for a management gig. Fully half of them got fired by Musk or had people they work directly with affected and are scared for their own jobs.

Any bets on how many COVID superspreader events are ongoing with the federal return to office mandate?

Hi all, We’re still here at OPM.

We have a situation where we MIGHT, and I do mean, MIGHT have four of Elon’s people blocked from the building.

Can we get press or a member of Congress down here? We’ve blocked them for two hours and they keep coming back and trying to go in.

This sounds crazy but today I scooped guacamole up with nice crisp cucumber slices like they were chips, and it was delicious.

I trust Stella Parks and the good folks at @serious-eats.bsky.social for many of my dessert needs, but I hadn't tried this one before. I was NOT disappointed.

Sunny Lemon Bars Recipe
This recipe is a cross between lemon curd and lemon meringue pie, soft and rich with egg yolks, but thick enough to slice into neat squares.

Is it just me or does Elon Musk sound more like a comic book villain every day? “Contemptible Fools” “the likes of which you can not possibly comprehend”. Next he’ll start escalating to words like “dolts”, narrating himself, and dropping people through secret trapdoors.

Remember Agent Orange‘s first term? A lot of this crazy stuff like Panama and Greenland is stuff being floated to see if he gets a strong response. It’s also part of the firehose distraction strategy of spewing out too much crazy for anyone to handle.

Government should NEVER be run like a business.

The goal of a business is to make a profit.

The goal of a government is to make life better for its people by providing effective government services, promote orderly society, and ensure public safety.

They are not compatible goals.

because shutting down the government hurts a lot of people, and because the SE desperately needs aid.

losing other good things is bad, but shutting down the government hurts people. there was nothing bad in the bill; tanking it would hurt people.

Government contractors do not get paid for shutdowns aside from whatever paid leave they might have available to them. They can also lose their public trust clearances and thus their jobs if they get behind in their payments. Are they an acceptable casualty for refusing to compromise?
December 19, 2024 at 11:37 PM
There are over 200,000 government contractors. They already lack the benefits and job security of federal employees and are in many instances considered disposable by government employees. Government employees eventually get paid for shutdowns and don‘t end up using leave.

For people cheering for shutdown and saying democrats should not compromise and only accept full cancellation of debt ceiling there are things you need to consider. People on the fringes who need government support to survive can literally die. Is that worth your principles?

Another relatively recent belief is that corporations are people. I will believe it when a corporation goes to jail for negligent homicide and is blocked from profiting off of its crimes.
