The attacks on universities are speeding up, not slowing down

The university sector *must* band together and stop acquiescing in advance (looking at you Columbia)

Musk posted on X today, stating, “Medicare is where the big money fraud is happening.” The Department of Health and Human Services spends nearly $2 trillion annually, mostly on health insurance programs like Medicare and Medicaid, making it a prime target.

They have also sought access to payment and contracting systems across HHS, which manage hundreds of billions of dollars in annual payments to health care providers. Musk’s staff has already gained access to these systems, including CMS’s grant-management system.

Musk’s staffers fanned out across several agencies today, sending representatives to the Atlanta headquarters of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and meeting with the Labor Department to seek access to sensitive data.

We can confirm that the communication ban at CDC (and presumably all of HHS) has been extended for at least another week with no specified end date. No external communication with local, state, or territorial health departments, healthcare systems, or the public. In the setting of ongoing outbreaks.

This communication pause is occurring while there are active outbreaks.

We are hearing from CDC sources that the communication pause has been indefinitely extended.

Communication is KEY to public health. In addition to not being able to share information with the public, there is no communication with state and local officials, who are vital public health partners.

@northernrail.bsky.social Is this the official company account? At 0951 I watched train crew (at Macclesfield Station) fail to enable at man in a wheelchair board the train. Seemingly a problem with the ramp. A politely shrugged apology and the man couldn't board. It's not good enough.

Macclesfield Station... a chap in a wheelchair waiting to board the train. The ramp seemingly can't be manoeuvred into place/can't be attached so the man and his friend cannot board. A polite shrug from staff and an invitation into the station. It's not good enough.

The real enemy of democracy is not misinformation or disinformation, it’s the type of education that doesn’t provide people with the necessary tools to critically approach information offered to them. The core fight is not against ignorance of current facts, it’s against poor education systems.

Consumer choice is influenced by industry lobbying, marketing & other tactics.

To build a healthier society, we need to ⬇️levels of harmful consumption.

To do this, we need to rethink how businesses are engaged in policy making where there are clear conflicts of interest.
