A thing I don’t enjoy in stories? Characters being mind controlled to act against their interests through magic or hypnosis or whatever. It’s so lazy. Especially since it’s clear from the world around us that people can delude themselves into believing evil shit all on their own.

Reminder: we are being trained not to care about other people. It underlines the attacks on migrants, on DEI, on trans youth, on so-called "wokeness."

Sure there are legitimate critiques but this is not about critiques. It's about supercharging capitalism's culture of uncare.

Is it ok if I share a bookish thought that may end up being stupid without y’all jumping me? (Kidding, do what you gotta. But I bite back).

Here’s the thing… is the only real difference between folklore and fantasy that white people can pretend they invented one of them? 🤣🤣🤣

Disingenuous argument. Denali was Denali before it was McKinley. Gulf of Mexico was *never* Gulf of America. The author would have us accept Trump renaming the Atlantic Ocean to the Great MAGA Sea. It's just nonsensical. We have to fight stupid, because accepting stupid just invites stupider.

The Indigenous People of North America have decided to go back to calling the Gulf of Mexico, “Chalchiuhtlicueyecatl”. It is what the Nahuatl People originally called it as it is the domain of the goddess Chalchiuhtlicue, who is assoc w/water bodies, including the Gulf of Mexico.

Even when well-intentioned, the rhetoric of humanization desensitizes us to the violence it describes.

A sad and interesting take. A military annexation of Canada would destroy both the US and Canada.

Why annexing Canada would destroy the United States
Americans have already been defeated by insurgents all over the world. Invading Canada would be no exception.

So will I, emulating you, while thinking of it privately as the Gulf of Scalzico.
I personally will continue to use "Gulf of Mexico" because our president is a wrathful felonious nincompoop with the intellect of paramecium and I do not consent to his cartographic buffoonery
Encyclopædia Britannica will continue to use ‘Gulf of Mexico’ for a few reasons:

-We serve an international audience, a majority of which is outside the U.S.

-The Gulf of Mexico is an international body of water, and the U.S.’s authority to rename it is ambiguous.
