Let me start by noting that one of the grievances in the Declaration of Independence was “imposing Taxes on us without our Consent.” If this resolution becomes law, it will be the first time during Home Rule that DC will be told we can’t control our own local taxes

If you haven’t read @joyannreid.bsky.social’s “Medgar & Myrlie” about Medgar Evers and Myrlie Evers, you should. It’s phenomenal—and I especially appreciated the audio book, as it’s read by Joy Reid herself:

Joy Reid's 'Medgar and Myrlie' traces extraordinary lives and love of civil rights leaders
A love story is helping paint a fuller picture of the civil rights movement. Activist Medgar Evers was killed in 1963 by a white supremacist outside his home in Mississippi. His murder thrust Myrlie E...

With all the videos featuring neighbors with whistles it was informative to see this carousel from Montgomery County Immigrant Rights Collective (IRC) reminding that "loud does not equal effective." Communities and views vary, so heed local partners' priorities.

Loud does not equal effective. Our rapid response practices are community-led, shaped by over 120+ directly impacted people, families who have lived through ICE detention, surveillance, and state violence. That’s why we do not use whistles in Maryland. The bill in the Senate this week that will attempt to interfere in DC's tax code is chaotic, bad, and should get voted down — but don't take our word for it.

Here's a running thread of the people and organizations who want Senators to VOTE NO on S.J. Res102: 🧵

GOP proponents say they want to preserve tax cuts for residents and businesses. D.C. officials say the move would produce fiscal chaos.

The thing about covering local public meetings is that you find a lot of really earnest people trying their hardest to make their communities a better place to live — not just for them and their families, but also their neighbors.

It gives you a lot of hope to see that play out in real time.

Last year Congress blew a $1.1 billion hole in DC's budget. Now they're trying to do it again.

Two new bills are attempting to take away nearly $700M of DC's own local tax money. They're anti-democratic, anti-family, and wrong.

Here are four ways you can help stop them: freedcproject.org/money

Americans must be eyes wide open that blocking the DHS funding bill will not shut down ICE.

ICE is now sitting on a massive slush fund it can tap, whether or not we pass a funding bill.
Federal agents cannot murder people in broad daylight and face zero consequences.

I will NOT support the DHS bill as it stands.

The DHS bill needs to be split off from the larger funding package before the Senate—Republicans must work with us to do that.

I’ll keep fighting to rein in DHS and ICE.
