It's finally the week of my HALF MARATHON SWIM and I'm delighted to say we've now raised over £25,000 for Dorothy House and @cancerresearchuk.org

Can we get to my target of £30k before I finish the swim on Thursday afternoon?

Despite the aggressive and unprofessional conducts from the landlords, all ACORN members remained polite, considerate, and professional. We are not asking the landlords to fetch us the moon. We just want him to give our members their money back! (6)

In July, we decided to try to meet Nikki and Sion's landlord again by visiting the address listed in their contract - which is in Newport. A group of us went with Nikki, who brought with her all the necessary documents and evidence to make it easy for the landlord. At last, we met the man! (5)

To recap:
- Emails: Ignored ❌
- Invitation to meet in person: Declined ❌
- Phone call: Responded to with threats of physical violence 💥
So far, NOT so good at all. But £730 worth of deposit (not to mention interest) is too big of an amount for our members and so ACORN could not give up! (4)

But what if we deliver a physical letter ✉️ to the landlord? That would be hard to ignore, right 🤔? So, in June, a group of us visited one of the landlord’s businesses, Heavenly Desserts in Cardiff. Here’s how that went 👇

Bit of backgrounds: Nikki and Sion moved out of their last flat in December 2025. Despite following all due processes, their £730 deposit has been withheld with no reason provided 😱. As their union, ACORN helped them draft a letter of demand, which also got ignored.

In my experience, some Welsh people don’t even know it’s Eryri either. I was on an uber the other day (in Cardiff) and the driver told me about his family trip to Snowdonia. I corrected him and said “Eryri now”. And he had to ask me to repeat myself and explain what I just said.

Kicking off the week with an ACORN victory: Over £100 of fees waived for Ashley and Kate
Our members Ashley and Kate were living with serious disrepairs in their flat. The Rent Guru, their letting agency, was not only unprofessional in arranging repairs but they also demanded maintenance fees.

Diolch yn fawr to @bigissue.com for speaking to ACORN Cardiff members in your article about compensation for eviction. Well done to Kate and Dan for articulating why this is fair and necessary. www.bigissue.com/news/housing...
Should renters get compensation from their landlord when they're evicted?
The Welsh government has rejected a proposal for renters to receive two months of rent in compensation when they are evicted.

In my 30 years in the UK I have felt shat on by its politics and people 3 times. After the EU referendum in 2016 and the 2019 election victory for BJ, this is the third one, for the first time from the side of Labour.
If you thought the PM’s speech was punchy, his foreword to the immigration white paper says high net migration has done “incalculable damage” to the country.

That is a serious shift in tone for a Labour government/party.

The tl;dr on this? It feels extremely bad to have this happen, but there's v little difference between this one enterprising scammer in Pakistan and huge multinationals buying up local papers, gutting them, & rolling out AI. Latter does harm on a much deeper, larger scale!
I'm briefly quoted in this, but for those interested my full comment was:

"Obviously I'm really unhappy that my work is being used to front what is clearly a scam. I'm very opposed to AI, not only because of the obscene environmental harm it does...

A pretty novel form of psychic damage is losing your news media job, having your entire portfolio of work wiped from the Internet, only for it to then be resurrected without your consent to promote an AI slop factory scam! Find out more about this headache here 👇
Remember the National?

The short-lived news service for Wales closed in 2022, but last month the title was "relaunched" at the same web address, declaring itself: "Independent. Trusted. Unapologetically Welsh."

That tagline, and everything else about the site, was a sham...

(This isn't legal advice. The whole point is to NOT need me. Also, if you're a person who won't suffer any harm from going to a protest no matter what you do, congratulations! Most people aren't so privileged, and stop thinking you're the default.)
