Hi all, wondering does anyone know what Heather Humphreys studied in UCG/NUIG/UG and what year did she graduate?

Researchers found that a majority of English majors at two universities in 2015 could not functionally understand passages from Charles Dickens.

which does validate my ever-growing concern about how a lot of people who use text-based social media appear to be unable to read
'Bleak' seems about right
An interesting take on a fairly depressing study about English majors' reading abilities. Spoiler: most can't read.

It's a sign of the times that callousness is now dressed up as intellectualism. That empathy is framed as being as morally problematic as prejudice. That bigotry and hatred is just honesty. That solidarity is treason.

The Wren Hunt of St Stephen's Day is one of Ireland's stranger folk-Christian traditions. Based around a story, in some accounts, that a wren gave away the saints hiding place to the Romans. The costumes mirror seasonal folk traditions across Europe.

When looking at cases where one person is being emphasised in relation to another, it is indicated by the use of an emphatic suffix. This is unlike English where you can hear the emphasis by vocally stressing the relevant word.

Exit Polls - what are they and how do they work?
The announcement of exit poll results, mere seconds after polling stations close at 10pm, is one of the most eagerly awaited moments of any Irish election campaign.

Taoiseach Simon Harris is asked what his team communicated to RTÉ after Kanturk exchange.

He says he doesn’t believe they questioned whether Charlotte Fallon was a member of Sinn Féin.

Here’s an article in @financialtimes.com by Janan Ganesh. I’m not going to dunk on this the way I did on the old site (we're nice over here). Instead, I bet a lot of people feel there’s something wrong with this article, but not exactly what. So let’s talk about that in this long-ish thread. 🧵

Following a recent article about the Leaving Certificate, worth restating that -

👉spreading assessment will increase, not mitigate, stress.
👉None of the proposals are for 'continuous assessment'.
👉English Leaving Cert is not a test of rote learning.

In almost 40 years of teaching, I have yet to find a teacher who prepares Leaving Cert students by ‘rote learning’
There are grounds to criticise the English exam, but it can only be successfully tackled with critical thinking
