Someone is currently arguing with me that the UK is a surveillance state because it has lots of security cameras, and the US isn't because it doesn't. So, since I'm going to have to explain constitutional law anyway, I may as well just give a free lecture on how the 4th amendment really works: 🧵 1/?

A friend just asked me what I do to stay hopeful and I told him one of my favorite strategies…I stay hopeful by remembering that no one has any idea what the fuck is going to happen, so as long as we don’t know, we gotta do what we can.

The TikTok ban, the Musk Twitter takeover, the Facebook moderation policy changes, the Republicans’ rapidly intensifying crackdowns on speech... let these be the proof you needed to move anything you care about online to a space you control.

Digital sovereignty is more important than ever.

THREAD: In 2023, I received an envelope with no return address. Inside was a flash drive containing tens of 1000s of secret files.

It came from a vigilante with a tumultuous past, who'd conducted a years-long undercover operation. He didn’t tell the FBI or his family. He only told me.

I wrote an essay about our bottomless thirst for diversion and how avoiding boredom is the engine of modern life. It’s based on the research I did for my book.

Are there any keyboard shortcuts you wish you'd known about sooner? ⌨️

For me, one of those is ALT + SHIFT + Up/Down - moves the selected item up or down in a list in Word and OneNote. Works on tables too!

So much time wasted copying and pasting

For folks new to BlueSky, @davidosmond.bsky.social has been running a near real time simulation of a near 100% RE grid for Australia using data lagged by 1 wk. The current scaling factors are 4.5x Wind, 2.7x grid PV and 2.1x rooftop PV. Storage is 5 hrs of demand. That gets 98% RE. 🧪🔌💡☀️💨🔋
Thread: Each week I run a simulation of Australia’s main electricity grid using rescaled generation data to show that it can get very close to 100% renewable electricity with 24GW/120GWh of storage (5 hrs at av demand)
Results:
Last week: 100% RE
Last 168 weeks: 98.5% RE (1/n)

Headlines like this are why people don’t trust or understand the scientific method.
Relatable but also: I’d like to talk a little bit about this headline, which is, in my opinion, an example of dysfunction in science reporting today.

(Since there’s no alt text, headline reads: “This Black Hole Is Eating So Much Matter that It Defies Known Science”, from 404 Media)
