I leveraged my middle-aged white guy privilege and wrote a Strongly-Worded Letter™ to Bsky today

The whole thing was over 2 pages long, so here are some tasteful excerpts:
I understand that many of the thriving groups of “early-adopters” here constituted demographics that nobody at Bluesky expected nor really knew how to contend with, and to that end I've noticed a trend of increasingly unscrupulous moderation decisions that seem to, on the surface, primarily target those demographics while leaving other “normal” users unbound by them. The proposed changes to the TOS further this trend of unfairly, and broadly maligning “unmentionables” from behind a of veneer of fairness and respectability. You expected resistance because you know that every change is always resisted, but in this case you are facing resistance because you're poised to codify your discomfort into site wide policy. One of the greatest strengths that Bluesky offers as a platform is the ability for users to moderate their own experiences, whether that is through blocklists, muted words, or community-run labeling systems. The abundance of controls available to end-users makes the proposed TOS changes feel both redundant and punitive, as anyone who doesn't want to see “synthetic, simulated, illustrated, or animated versions” of things that they find traumatizing or uncomfortable already has the means to tailor their experiences accordingly. If no laws are being broken, and no one's safety is being threatened, then what exactly is the impetus behind these changes? I believe you owe us a transparent explanation for this. The only conclusion I can draw is that this is an overt attempt to drive away individuals and communities that are making you uncomfortable, either to appease internal stakeholders or to court external buy-in. Whatever your reasoning may be, I implore you to reconsider the changes you're proposing. While I have no doubt that these changes will more than likely aid in curtailing the activity of some genuine “bad actors” who are currently slipping beneath the proverbial radar, you will also be claiming a significant amount of “collateral damage" in the process. The deliberate vagueness of these rule changes will now potentially encompass things like timeless Renaissance paintings and sculptures, and popular media such as “Game of Thrones," to say nothing about the thousands of independent artists who freely enjoy sharing their work on this platform. If nothing else, I want you to consider the degree with which you are setting yourselves up to be taken advantage of with these changes. There is a vocal subsection of people who believe they are owed sterile and “vanilla” spaces where-ever they go, free of any and all things they find personally objectionable, and that extends to their use of social media networks; you are effectively removing the guard rails that are keeping them at bay. Any sufficiently nebulous work of art will now be subject to mass, bad-faith reporting coordinated by these people, and even though they constitute a small (but vocal) minority, they will not stop spamming you with reports until every last thing that they find “problematic" has been scrubbed from the site… and the likelihood that they will ever relent or make your lives easier once you begin capitulating to this is extremely small. Make no mistake: these people are the enemies of free expression, and you are preempting an uneasy alliance with them that will likely result in more moderation labor and increased workloads for your entire team, especially if you allow them to become the only users with any real reach on the platform. I know a lot of the current users of the site are not what you originally envisioned or asked for, and trying to “clean” things up a bit might feel like the right move at this time, but moderation based on “vibes” isn't really moderation: most of the time it's just discrimination. Bluesky, of course, has the right to modify or change its user agreement at any time for any reason, and while you are well within your legal rights to make these kinds of sweeping changes, please consider the implications for the millions of users who have dedicated the past couple of years to building this platform alongside you and making it what it is. People are objecting to these changes in good faith, largely because they enjoy this platform and they do not want to see another beloved digital ecosystem commit itself to premature irrelevancy just like Tumblr and Twitter did. These changes are going to increase your moderation difficulties, stifle free expression, and make it easier to bully people off of the site. Please reconsider your intentions with these changes and modify the TOS document accordingly. Thank you for your time.
