Honestly modern polling has destroyed politics. Just ticking of boxes on a list of numbers without any conviction, argument and ideas is a shadow of leadership. Sometimes it necessary to convince the populous of certain ideas have.
Here with yellow checkmarks we have five examples of real things that Gavin Newsom and leading California Democrats espouse. Not a straw man.

My take is Democrats should drop these ideas, ideas that do not sound at all like economic populism to me.

It’s honestly so sad how we in Europa and especially Germany fumbled the industrial potential of providing renewable energy infrastructure to the world. We rather built gas turbines and shitty cars.
Welp, updated my "biggest wind turbine in the world" slide again. Last time I taught thermo, it was a 19 MW turbine with 128 m blades. This year, it's 26 MW with 150 m blades. Always offshore, always in China.

Context: A Boeing 747 is 71 m long. 150 m is about the height of a 50-story skyscraper.
China tests ‘world’s largest’ offshore wind turbine
With a hub height of 185 meters, the turbine will be equivalent to a 63-story skyscraper.

In the first half of 2025, Russia spent more on its military than in all of 2022, and a little less than in all of 2023.
In the first half of 2025, Russian military spending was close to $300 billion (purchasing power parity). Usually, there is more military spending in the second half of the year, so Russian military spending of $600 billion PPP in 2025 is realistic. Link to source below.

A substantial amount of the American foreign policy sphere is dictated by guys who think Tom Clancy is real and it's being handed over to guys who think Call of Duty is real

The bar is in hell but war is icky so we'll let them keep it
Russia is their great white hope against the Chinese menace, and anything fancy they say to make it sound more strategic than that is just window dressing
Also Colby: we can't give any more air defense to Ukraine because we have none to spare. Puh-lease. The Pentagon's obvious pro-russian stance is obvious.

I'd also add: no willingness to do hybrid warfare on offense. If we have mysterious fires at an ammunition plant in Germany and there's probative SIGINT, one should burn in Russia too.

It’s honestly disheartening to see how extremely educated people can stumble over simple problems, like that the conversion of military budgets with exchange rates is extremely flawed for some countries, and therefore assume nefarious motives and invite conspiracy thinking.
In 2024, Germany, France & the UK military spend was $236bn. Russia (in active war) spent $149bn. The EU plans to increase military spending to $800bn by 2030.

It is naive to think this burgeoning war economy is about an 'acute threat' from Russia.

It worth not overstating Russia’s power (they’re good at overselling themselves) these raw dollar figures don’t say much.

China & Russia get far far more for per dollar than France or Germany. Better to compare actual military capabilities. The Russian army + missile, drone production etc is huge.
