Great reading last night of Dangerous Women at the Sacramento Poetry Center. Dangerous, tender, and hilarious. Poetry as solace and political resistance. So much fun, too. @moiramagneson.bsky.social @patricia-caspers.bsky.social @kimshuck.bsky.social

In addition to all of the other insanity, my barista gave me lemonade without any sugar in it. When I asked why, she said, “Oh, did you want sugar in that?”
Like, what?
Are people out there drinking sugarless lemonade, aka lemon juice, aka power pucker?

We can’t be too scared. This should make more people create more protest. We can’t let this scare us into obeying in advance.

I spoke with CJ Knows about William Freeman, the Afro-Native teenager who challenged America's original profit-driven prison. We talked about the violence he endured over a century ago and the important message he has for today.

I just learned this history today.

In his boldest act of resistance ... Freeman spoke up. He told the guards that he “did not want to work” because he “was deriving no benefit” from the labor. He deserved wages, he repeated. He was unyielding, certain.

Have we all agreed it’s ok to use hashtags in the Bluesky? For a while it seemed they were socials non grata.
Anyway, here’s a flower.

My kid: Gen X has nothing unifying them. That’s why they’re called Gen X

Me: What! We’re unified by being latchkey kids—except your dad, which is why he’s giving boomer.

Husband: What! I had a mullet.

Happy Mother’s Day to my mama, out there every damn day saving democracy. She’s knocking on your door. She is registering you to vote. She’s setting out cookies at the strategy meetings, writing you postcards, and putting up chairs at the town halls. She retired one day, next day she got to work.

-Paid family leave
-Equal pay
-Universal childcare

(But get your mom flowers, too)

What I don’t understand is why instead of arguing w/ me that “everything is not about Black suffering” these condescending White progressives won’t get them some business & read some Black history to learn our survival strategies. How y’all think we’re still here? You better learn quick.

The way progressive White folks keep ignoring that most Black folks lived under authoritarianism HERE from the early 1500s to the 1970s in parts of this country & instead reach to Germany to describe our current situation is deep—

Do y’all not know the Nazis modeled their system on Jim Crow HERE?

BREAKING: In a major civil rights victory, a federal court today issued a preliminary injunction barring Border Patrol from using stop-and-arrest practices that violate federal law and the U.S. Constitution.

They can’t target people just because they’re Brown, or day laborers, or farm workers.

From 2023 to 2024, drug overdose deaths dropped a stunning 24% in just a year from 114k, to just 87k, nearly 30,000 lives. This is almost entirely attributed to a Biden Administration program providing free Narcan.

Naturally, Trump and RFK Jr. just ended the program: www.cdc.gov/media/releas...

Fellow authors, I love you, and I know it feels like we don’t have a choice, but B&N and Am*zon both scheduled sales this week to preempt Independent Bookstore Day, a hugely vital source of income for indie bookstores. Please don’t promote their sales; please promote your local indie this week.
