There should be more pure research positions in the social sciences and humanities and also more pure teaching positions. These are distinct skill sets. Many are excellent at one and not the other. Each should be valued. A university norm that one excel in both is unnecessary.

It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

Earlier this year, I had to withdraw a publication on genocide hours before it was to be published due to senior Harvard administrators’ threats to my Harvard-employed coauthor. Last week, they fired Mary Bassett for refusing to ignore Palestine. My response:

I rarely read Wirecutter as it’s essentially one big Amazon ad, but this is something every consumer should see. Please shop local if you can - feel stuff, try on, look closely before you buy.

“The whole point of running for this seat was that I could do some insider trading and set myself up for a highly paid lobbyist position. You’re talking about taking away half of that incentive. Why would anyone run for Congress if they can’t leverage their knowledge, illegally?”

TN07 is a story about gerrymandering: the GOP cracked Nashville into 3 districts when it redrew the 2022 map, destroying the Dem seat there.

Fast-forward: a section of Nashville, which just 5 years ago had a Dem representative, is now voting Dem by huge margins but it's been designed to not matter.

I take Wikipedia for granted. Reading this Jimmy Wales interview reminded me in our Fantasyland age what a remarkable and important creation it is. True pillar of civilization. Runs on only $200 million a year. Requires our support. So I’m finally donating. Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2025/10/18/m...

There are specific reasons Trumpists want war on Venezuela, but there‘s a generic one: they crave power to make war on anyone, any time, for completely fabricated reasons, and then to use the guise of war to increase violence and repression everywhere, including home.

They are lawless bestial scum.

In Buddhism we call in the Sangha and it's incredibly important to your well-being. It's why your primary care provider may ask if you belong to a church - social determinants of health. My friends if you don't have community make that your New Year's resolution 🍾
What's your community?

Everyone needs it and capitalism tries to fill that void with stuff - owning things brings you closer to the influencers.

Libraries, Churches, Volunteering, Gyms, anywhere you can find that sense of belonging is a better way to spend your time than Amazon.
