It’s not my colon I dislike; it’s the cancer that’s hurting us both. I’m grateful to the little fella for tolerating the pain we caused him while we tried to save him.

It allowed me to make preparations, ask the tough questions about the other vital organs in there, and even create a plan for how I want to live after the operation and beyond.

This week, before a long-awaited meeting with a surgeon in Guildford, we had a final 'confinement in the bog.' I asked my colon to be a good chap—to let me drive there, do the meeting, and actually enjoy the day.

Mostly, these 'chats' take place on the loo. Sometimes several times a day; sometimes while I’m trying to be 'normal' and venture more than 100 metres from a toilet.

Over the 18 months since my diagnosis, I’ve developed a conversational relationship with my colon. Most mornings, I ask him to be kind. Other days, I curse him, demanding to know what on earth I’ve done to deserve such grief.

In the case of Lamah - he is also under investigation by the police, along with managers and doctors in maternity.
In Lamah's case the Trust have chosen to protect him - as he's a senior consultant, not a nurse.
