when I tell people my parents were missionaries, that i grew up a Christian even if I'm an atheist now, *this* is the type of Christian I grew up as. this is the kind of person who I was taught to aspire to be.

like it's fine not to believe this (I don't), but as someone who has studied too much bible and christian history, it's always amusing seeing the disconnect between what jesus said and how people act, and this is just a case where it seems to be exceptionally clear.
