New research from MIT found that those who used ChatGPT can’t remember any of the content of their essays.

Key takeaway: the product doesn’t suffer, but the process does. And when it comes to essays, the process *is* how they learn.

My latest pre-print is out:

"Pareidolic Illusions of Meaning: ChatGPT, Pseudolaw and the Triumph of Form over Substance"

I really enjoyed this one, where I juxtapose LLMs & pseudolaw to argue both create illusions of meaning that trick users.

The election has created some fissures on the left, particularly among online pundits. And that's okay. When this energy is directed, that's how coalitions are built. I do, however, take issue with the strategy of building bridges to the right. All it does is validate them.

Okay. Here's our guy. Russell "Russputin" Vought. He convinced Trump that the POTUS has the power of "impoundment" to direct funds and override Congress. He's wrong but might get away with it. Here's how they plan to do it, how we can resist and what's at stake.

I like this chart. My son is reading Factfulness by Hans Rolling right now and getting a good inoculation against some of these. 🧪

🧪 Is anyone aware of any efforts to preserve the public information currently available on the EPA, OSHA, FDA, and USDA websites? There is a lot of critical scientific reference material on those sites, and I'm afraid that much of it might be removed next year.

Another excellent conversation. On nuclear as a quick-fix solution to AI environmental impacts:

"Even if you look at their announcements, they talk about this in the 2030s ... so there's a clear mismatch between the timeline in which they want the energy and when the energy can deliver."

Bingo.
Major cloud providers are promising nuclear power will allow them to build as many data centers as they want without a huge climate impact.

This week MV Ramana joins @parismarx.com to discuss the serious problems with those assertions.

I've said it before. I'll say it again. And I'll keep saying it... put AirTags in your luggage, people!

AlaskaAir didn't load my gun case onto the outbound aircraft. How the hell it happened, nobody knows.

But we were able to identify its location immediately.

The idea that human morality can be predicted relies on a flawed understanding of humans and morality. So not surprised that OpenAI and CS researchers are going down this pseudoscientific and phrenologist route.
