It took Germany almost 50 years to recover from Hitler. Consider what happened. If we are forcibly divided after Trump is defeated and gone choose wisely what section you end up in. It could be for generations.

The Gestapo would not have happened without the takeover and vertical integration of state and local police under Himmler in 1934. (He was formally made chief of all German police in 1936.)

These are literal Gestapo tactics.

The ability of Red States to let their people suffer and die in the name of ideological purity and rigidity is amazing. That occurs despite persistent evidence that the policies derived from that ideology don't work and create measurable harm.

In the naive days of Trump's first term it was difficult to imagine a AG more corrupt than Barr. This time around, Trump found someone more corrupt than Barr.

There seems to be no illegal action by Trump and his minions that Bondi didn't instigate herself, greenlit, or chose to ignore.

They also get to maintain that all-important illusion of their power status (and their robes when Trump fully consolidates power). As a consolation prize, Roberts, Alito and the other members of the Star Chamber Six get to keep pushing through their pet reactionary and dominionist rulings. /2

What if Trump and Roberts have already reached an accommodation? What if they agreed to support his dictatorship, with an occasional, ultimately meaningless, ruling that allows them to maintain the illusion of independence? /1

Kirk Cameron is pushing a fundamentalist agenda that sees public schools, libraries, and even cartoons as enemies.

America doesn’t need a “war over culture.”

It needs respect for pluralism, equality, and the separation of church and state.

ICE now has a larger budget than most of the world’s militaries.

A reminder that police have only ever *responded* to alleged crime, but a living wage, food & water security, & accessible healthcare have always *prevented* crime.

So if you want safer communities, invest in people—not punishments.

Civil wars and backsliding to yet another dictatorship are depressingly common.
Stable democracies require more than just elections. They need a stable of strong supporting institutions to function properly. For example, it took hundreds of years for Britain to transition fully. /2

An astonishing figure in this piece:

Last year, the U.S. budgeted $12.8B for new affordable housing.

This country is now poised to spend $45B on immigrant detention centers.

That's nearly *four times* as much on cages as on homes—in the middle of a devastating housing and homelessness crisis.

If you think that’s far-fetched, then you really haven’t been paying attention to what the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress have been up to lately.

If this were happening in Beijing or Shanghai, Western reporters there would be making it big-time news.

(Yes, China vastly more repressive and controlled. But they don't PRETEND to have First Amendment, habeus corpus, immigrant-asylum, etc.)

Did not expect ever to see this in my home territory.
