The Democratic centrists caved when they should have held their ground. What people outside of the US might not realize is that most Americans are one medical crisis away from financial ruin. Over 60% of U.S. bankruptcies involve medical debt or costs as a major factor.
The politics of the shutdown:
*GOP had a strong opening position
*Undercut themselves with the RIFs and unnecessary cuts to blue states/SNAP
*Polls showed GOP getting most of the blame, no reason to assume that would change
