When I see any kind of shitty 9/11 jokes anywhere online, but especially BSky, I just block. It's a flat-out block & I don't even take time to see what's in their popup. No one making shitty jokes about that tragedy are worth anything at all, nor are they likely old enough to be worth listening to.
I remember The Chicks getting cancelled by radio & country music & everyone (truly cancelled, not like fools complaining now) because they spoke out against the war, while T.Keith made millions off BS "patriot" songs (& hating The Chicks).
White country music made tons of money off the war for oil🙃🫠

This. He's not a snowflake; he's read the room & is getting the fuck out. He doesn't have to be smart, just not dumb enough to put himself at the very top where they fall first. All these rats put themselves in places where they could get out easily when shit went sideways (as they figured it would)
He knows that Patel is being set up to be Trump's fall guy and doesn't want to be caught in the blowback. He isn't as clueless as his boss. I'll give him that.

It would be nice if the center-&-left-leaning billionaires would come together and support the American Academy of Pediatrics in the wake of the GOP & WH cutting their funding.

I'm not sure there are enough tax breaks in this for them, now, but it would be the right thing to do.

If you read enough history, you will encounter some well-meaning person say "Well, maybe we should consider if democracy is outdated. Look at what Mr. Mussolini/General Pinochet is doing." And you think, wow, thank God we have more perspective today. And then you realize that we don't.
New, from me: Recently Marc Dunkelman wrote "What the Left Could Learn From Trump’s Brutal Efficiency" in the Times.
I respond here, not to dunk on Dunkelman, but because it represents a mistaken view of governance that progressives are tempted to embrace. 🧵

BREAKING: The House of Representatives passed a bill that would criminalize gender-affirming care for transgender youth under 18 and put doctors in prison for providing this care.

This bill is an unjustifiable threat to the well-being of trans youth and their families. The Senate must reject it.

I’ll also note that there are 25 million naturalized citizens, so even if the Trump admin succeeded at its wildest dreams, we’re talking 2,400 denaturalizations a year, or 0.01% of the total naturalized immigrant population.

So it’s more to spread fear and send a message than make a tangible dent.

The FCC updated the website after this exchange and removed the word independent. If that doesn’t scare everyone, it should.

We talk a lot about how race and gender grievance are offered to white men to distract them from exploitative working conditions that are in fact universal, and this piece is a beautiful example of how the work of that distraction gets done.

The PQ is a procedural vote that ends debate ahead of a vote on a Rule. It's significant because if the minority party manages to engineer a defeat of the PQ, they - the Democrats - get to take over the floor for a set amount of time, and can call up their preferred legislation.

It's a procedural vote, but defeating the PQ gives the minority control of the floor for a set amount of time.

It's exceedingly rare. Last time it succeeded was in 1984. But they would have used this window to call up the ACA extension bill. Which is why they were so mad when Rs gaveled it closed.

Correct. Discharge Petition is very much alive.

Timing: now that it has 218 signatures, it has to "ripen" for 7 legislative days, then any member who signed the DP can call it up. Then Johnson has 2 legislative days to schedule a vote.

Which still means January 2026 at earliest, around Jan 13-15

They have to leave the vote open for a designated amount of time. The Chair announces how long they have: "This is a 15-minute vote."
Once that time is expired, it's open game. You've seen votes stay open for HOURS before to negotiate.
They waited on this one until they had a majority, then gaveled.

I was in the Speaker's Lobby when this happened and it generated a storm of protest. Rep. Riley Moore R-WV gaveled a procedural vote to a close while one Democrat was ready to vote. That vote would have defeated the measure on a 204-204 tie - but Moore opted for a very fast gavel.

That's not exactly what happened. They were voting on the GOP health plan (which doesn't include ACA subsidies) and they iced out Dan Goldman because he was late for the vote. So it passed. The ACA discharge petition vote won't happen until 2026 because of the waiting period.
