Governments reframed the emergency as one of ‘addiction’ to PREVENT the wider public from recognizing that the cause of this catastrophe is drug prohibition, a law that government can change

Every Sunday I try to catch up on the articles and stories that I should have read days/weeks/months/years ago—the infinity tabs on my safari app.

Most of them aren’t worth the read, but here are a few that you should check out if you haven’t already!

North Cowichan began dismantling the Lewis Street encampment on Nov. 17 moving about 75 residents to new sites. The Cowichan Community Care Network says the move puts people at risk of violence and overdoses as the new sites are further away from the Warmland Shelter and overdose prevention site.
Advocates worry that moving Lewis Street encampment endangers residents who have nowhere else to go – The Discourse.
North Cowichan said it will service and provide ‘temporary’ sheltering sites, while Cowichan Valley sees a spike in overdoses.

The fact that this was predictable means it was also PREVENTABLE
From November 18:

“The people who were living there were moved on Tuesday, but they’re not all in a better place.”

From November 19:

“Island Health issued an overdose advisory for the Cowichan area on Wednesday morning, warning of an increased number of drug poisonings in the region.”

Fuck.

You really have to read both of @kwardvancouver.bsky.social’s skeet’s to get how fucked up this is. I’ll just put the headlines side by side.

Displacement and evictions are forms of violence. They result in very observable harms including death and irreparable injury.

Refusing to fund SNAP is ableism.

Cutting Medicaid is ableism.

Terminating ACA subsidies is ableism.

Slashing affordable housing is ableism.

This regime has a very clear eugenics agenda.

They’re targeting services they know disabled people rely on to survive.

We are not expendable.

Jesse Butler raped & strangled two girls…

One ended up in hospital.

He managed a plea deal as a “youthful offender”. He was 17.

He won’t serve time.

How come Jesse avoids jail time because he’s a “kid”… yet the Epstein survivors are being reframed as women?

"Several studies and government reports have found that drug seizures are associated with increased risk of overdose, prevent people from accessing life-saving services or calling emergency services during overdoses, and increase harm to people who use drugs."
“People who are getting clicks and likes online and [we have] a reactive government that is responding to the moral panic to avoid getting voted out … so we have policymakers with extremely liberal backgrounds doing extremely conservative things to retain their position of power,” Ranger said.
“Politicians need to do better, and this case is really, really clear on that.”

Harm reductionists explain a key victory, as a Supreme Court of Canada ruling affirms protection from possession arrests for people at an OD scene.
