“No city can solve its transportation problems if it neglects the greatest self-propelling vehicle of all: the pedestrian.” One of many really smart things Lewis Mumford said a really long time ago about cars, transportation and cities. Read more, via @davidzipper.bsky.social.
The Dark Prophet of Car-Clogged Cities
70 years before congestion pricing landed in New York City, Lewis Mumford sounded the alarm on letting automobiles run amok in America’s downtowns.

I remember trying to convince the landfill operator I used to work for to install solar farms on all our closed sites, but they called it a bad investment.

That was eight years ago.

I wonder if they’ve changed their tune yet because projects like this👇 are popping up all over the country.
A solar farm comes online on a coal ash landfill site in West Virginia
A 5.5-megawatt solar farm just came online in Rivesville, West Virginia, on a brownfield site near a shuttered coal-burning power station.

At least 20 people lost their lives over the weekend as storms ravaged the country.

Meanwhile, Trump & DOGE have terminated 1,000 employees from NOAA — the agency that provides severe weather forecasting and warnings.

Make no mistake: these cuts put people's lives in danger.

It felt weird to do this post on my usual public transit beat.

It felt like I was pretending that the world isn't going over a cliff.

But there's a thematic connection to the moment: We'll need more transit capacity soon, as lots of people will no longer be able to afford cars.
Vancouver's @translink.ca has a "community shuttle" product that uses small vehicles. Some considered them cuter than buses, but on this line in the dense downtown they were too small for the demand, leaving ppl behind.

So it's great to see this change. Capacity > cuteness!

I noted recently that I have a very significant trade deficit with farmers. In fact, I don't grow any food and they don't buy anything from me. I haven't calculated the tariffs I should impose to stop them from ripping me off by providing me with food to buy.

Less than 300 #OffshoreWind turbines could reduce our reliance on U.S gas & replace polluting gas plants—zero-carbon, low-cost & barely visible from shore.

So why is @fordnation saying no?

Attention policy makers: As a business owner in Canada, I could take advantage of pretty good tax breaks if I had a car. But I don’t want a car and choose to live where I don’t need one. That’s better for everyone.

But there are no tax breaks connected to my public transit pass.
